Ok well im not 100% clear in the difference (if there is one) between telephoto and zoom lenses. Either way im looking for something with a fair range ie// 28-200 that is an example, i know something like that would be pretty damn expecive but you get the idea, i dont want a fixed one like 100mm only or something. Ill only have about $200ish canadian to spend so is there anything like that you could suggest? Id rather NOT buy used if at all possible. so ya, through those ideas at me lol.

I'm pretty sure you can get a 70-300mm lens for that price. Maybe not the Canon version, but the Sigma or Tamron. I bought mine used off eBay, which I know you weren't too interested in, but I only paid $150, and it was like new.

That said, any of the cheaper zooms or telephotos don't have the same image quality as the more expensive ones. Not trying to discourage you, or saying they're bad lenses, because they're not. Just throwing that out there so you're aware.

A telephoto lens has a fixed focal length and is often referred to as a prime lens. Whenever you see a lens refered to as a zoom it means it covers a range of focal lengths.

Not sure there are any good options with the criteria you mention but I see this at B&H for US$180, which is more then you limit or you could get a kit lens witch is 18-55mm for your limit.

Ok thanks, if i were to buy off ebay used could you recommend some things to look out for as far as scams or w/e i hardly ever buy online. I was looking at the 70-300mm and that seems what im looking for, looks like a good lens and the price is right.

When they say like:
"SIGMA 70-300mm DG Lens for Nikon D70s D70 D50 D200 D100"

does that mean they will ONLY work for the nikons listed? would they not work for my 350D and if so why is that?

Each camera manufacturer has a proprietary mount so third party lens are built for each of the different camera mounts.

If you're looking at the sigma 70-300 look at one that says it's for the Canon EF mount or EOS cameras.

The 18-55mm came with my camera, but I need something that can go closer, i find myself dissapointed by missing some great shots. I use my 50mm/1.8 as my everyday lens for most things and its great, but id like something with a larger range. I think that the 70-300mm should be just what im looking for, over 1000 people have it so it must be good for something lol. Down the road if i find its not good enough i can always upgrade right lol.

You basically need to stick with a Canon mount (note that Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and probably others sell Canon mounts, so not just name brand) for the 350. The way the lens mounts on the camera is different between Nikon and Canon - square peg round hold type of thing:-). The technical answer is some Nikon lenses will fit with adapters but you don't want to go there yet.

I'm happy with my 70-300. It's no good indoors without very bright lights, but outdoors, especially on a tripod, it takes good images and I have no complaints, especially for the price.

As far as eBay goes, this is how I use it: I read EVERYTHING in the listing, and if for any reason something strikes me as odd, or even a little "off", I just move on to the next listing. There's no shortage of options there. I'd say ONLY use PayPal, and to only bid on an item when the seller has great (98% or better) feedback. And don't get caught up in the bidding and over price yourself!

I've heard people here say decent things about the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro, especially for the price. I've never used it, so maybe somebody will give you an honest opinion on it. You can look at some of the shots submitted with that lens here.

I have the Sigma 70-300 DG APO Macro and am very happy with it ... might not be as wide as you'd like ... but you've got the wider end covered with the kit lens ... it was about $200 (American) from B&H ...

edit to say that I also got my remote (RC-1) from B&H ... only about $30 and well worth the money ...

the APO version is Sigma's 'professional' or better glass ... do a google search and read some of the reviews ... it's really a great lens for the money ...

Thanks, Ok heres what i got so far on my wishlist that im gunna try to order tomorrow:

sigma 70-300mm

Remote

that comes to 290.534 CAD which im very happy with, thats including shipping.

I was gunna add a Hoya 58mm Filter set (UV, Polarizer, and warming filter) for $58usd but that ran me over my limit so that will have to wait till next payday :( I know some sites have discount codes and stuff, is the same for this site? If so what are some codes and stuff? If not im sure ill be happy with those 2 things for the next 2 weeks lol. Next payday ill need that filter kit + step down ring thing, and a sensor cleaning kit. All in due time i suppose :(

nvm, money is tight so the new glass will have to wait till next payday, im ordering the Hoya filter kit (52mm) and the remote right now, trying to see if theres anything for like $50cad i could get that would be fun, if not ill put that towards the 70-300mm.
