I did the scary math thing once, for insurance. It isn't pretty, better if you only see a few here and a few there.

Okay, you are looking at a lens that's case costs half as much as my entire gear! That worries me...

It worries me that I might be there someday. My wife would die.

Edit: Oh, I get it. I didn't see that the word you was in bold. Hehe.

It can cost you as little as $150 or it can have an infinite price tag.
Right now rough estimate I have about $8,150 rapped up in just a camera and some lenses. This don't include my tripod, head, filters, flash, bags, cards, etc. All in all, I would be in just under $10,000. And that's cheap probably compared to some here.

Look on the bright side - you could bury her in that case. ;-)

one thing i've learned from my mentors is not to buy something today that you would want to upgrade tomorrow. do whatever you can to buy it right the first time. unless, that is, you would rather be an equipment swapper, spending more time on ebay than behind the lens, shooting ;-)

iow, learn how to get the most out of what you have while saving for what you really need.

This is just what I have been thinking. It is hard to resist though.

You know the B&H site lets you have a wish list and it IS then a B&H catalogue :-) Very convient, just lets you list all the stuff with a little buy link next to them :-/

That could be dangerous because they also accept PayPal.

This thread is sooo true... I have just got the 70-200 2.8 IS, after much discussion with the financial auditor (the girlfriend), after assuring her I wouldnt need another lens for ages after this one..

Oh, and the 17-40 that I want now.

Just in time for the Canon 7D when its announced in March.

And the 24-70 2.8 IS that is also going to be announced.

And the 100-400 4th gen IS F4.

And possibly a new flash.

Then some lights.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

It's easy really you just have to make 1 or 2 sacrifices like errrr.

Don't pay the motgage
wear 1 pair of jeans and buy cheap trainers
eat 3 times a month
get people to call YOU!
Furniture??? what's that?
spend less time in the pub, say... only 4 days a week

Then you can buy all the nice gear you want.

I been kinda lucky really, I got the most of my stuff in Japan while I had a very well paid job, now in UK I'm on the sick and cannot even afford the petrol to drive to the camera shop. I have been selling my old SLOWER Nikon lenses and buying FASTER Sigma lenses. After several conversations with myself on the subject I have decided I do not need anything else really.

except-

a nice Manfrotto tripod and head
Sigma 120-300 f2.8
maybe an external flash and/or better strobes (i have interfit 150's X2)

I KNOW the fever when it hits, I got it BIG in Japan because I had the money to throw away, my house was paid for my car and even my main food was all supplied so I had cash to buy, I do not drink so it was ALL about camera gear and guitars..

I say.. if you WANT it so bad, get it, we only have 1 life, try to enjoy it to the best of you ability.

One thing I found about photography, it makes all the other purchases look like chump change. I buy $200 Asics running shoes (for running of course) a few times per year and I never blink. Before I started photography it would have made me cringe.

Same as when I bought my Xbox ($300) and my Xbox 360 ($500 + games). Didn't think twice.

Happy spending :)
