Started out not all to long ago with the pentax DL.
Then next thing I know it's a couple hundred for a 50mm 1.4
Then $400 (after rebate!) for a fisheye zoom.
Now that I have taken some family photos for others and have had people over cropping and buying photos I am thinking about $200-$400 flashes, lol...
Does it ever end?
How much is this costing you. :) |

Sounds like great advice to me.
I have already learned not to let my wife know how much. :)

it's the nature of the beast, don't look at it as how it's going to cost you but as how much it's going to make you. I don't think anyone would mind paying 10 grand for a camera if it can make them 100 grand.
the trick is if you want new toys you have got to make the business to rationalize them. most of the time, thats not too hard. :) |

As long as you aren't racking up the total on a credit card somewhere that idea is great. |

It never ends, and there is always something you have to have.
Did I mention never finding the perfect method of carrying your equipment, I know I have now have 4 over the shoulder bags and 4 backpacks.. and still looking
But it is all worth it,,

I've been fortunate enough to make more than I've spent so far.
In fact, I'd have a hard time spending this kind of money without knowing that it's an investment. I admire those of you who are passionate enough about all this to spend your personal money on this expensive gear!
Next D200 body
Next new studio lights
Next...
There is certainly always the next step isn't there?
I talk to those newspaper guys with $20,000 of gear hanging around their necks (3 MarkIIs with different lenses) and they act like it's not big thing.
Maybe if they had to buy it they'd think differently. |

No it does not end.
I'm early in this deal...a $150 lens, then you want the better one for $450. then you want the longer one, then the longer one with IS for $1600.
My friend emmanuel got it bad..he can afford to buy the toys, but you don't want to ask what he's spent, do you? $8000 that I know of.
At one point he wanted to shoot wildlife, so he got a longer lens, a 300mm. then the a longer one, a 400mm. then a better one (tamron to sigma then to the canon). then one with IS. He was taking a trip to california and didn't want to take his nice big lens (500 F4 IS), so he got a used 300 F4 IS for the trip. It's a vicious circle!
I'm getting on the treadmill now too...My first lens was $70, then my most expensive lens was $400. Then in October I got a 10-22 for $700. Now i want a 17-55 2.8 IS at $1000. The one after that I want is the 70-200 2.8 IS at $1700. I'm not sure I want a lens that costs more than my camera!

I've been pretty good about my spending...Last January I got my first, and only, digital camera. A Nikon D70s kit with a 17-70 f/3.5-4.5 with a 1 GB card for about $1300 plus a Nikor 80-200 mm f/2.8 for $1,100 and a tripod for about $50...Total of $2,450...a loan from my parents :)
Since then I've spent about $100 on two tripods, $300 for the "education" Adobe CS2 Suite (I know, awesome price) and besides that everything I've gotten has been gifts for my birthday and Christmas...Including a backpack, some filters and books...
But man I dream...I would love to have a fisheye lens, macro, another camera body for shooting sports, a 400mm, and soooooooooooo much more....Maybe a Hasselblad? hehe...In my dreams! |

I had a HUGE wish list when I began "serious" photography 4 years ago. Today I have a lot of equipment, a studio, and clients... and my wishlist is HUGE!!!! It never changes, but hopefully will finance itself eventually. I always seem to want just a little more than I earn though! lol

Well, it seems you have everything. Even the coveted Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. |

Well, I don't have a 500 f/4. That is on my list. Oh, and did I mention a a 135/2.0? Yeh, that's on there too. While we're dreaming, how about a Zeiss 21/2.8 Distagon?
Yep, "everything" is a very subjective term. Once terminal L disease sets in you are doomed. |
