I'm wondering something. I just checked out al three ribbon winners from the challenges on the frontpage and noticed that some of them got 1's, 2's and 3's Why do people give such low scores on an apparantly good photo? Do they feel threatend by the quality of the photo and give a low score just to stop it from getting a ribbon? Or do they genuinely dislike the picture?

If they do to stop it from getting a ribbon then I find it really sad that people are THAT competetive. It's just a nice challenge and there's nothing in it for you except a nice virtual ribbon and eternal glory :P

I think that when some people suspect a rules violation they vote low. This is not correct however. We have been told to vote as if the photo was legitimate.

Well I'm sorry for being a newbie.

But then it goes to show that all the rules implemented to prevent giving low scores without comments have not worked yet.

Enjoy your ribbon and go read the thousands of other similar posts to this. They all end the same way.

Everyone gets low scores. Live with it.

allright...this is going in the wrong direction. I'm not frustrated because someone gave me a low score. That's up to them, I give low scores as well. Therefore I looked at the other ribbonwinners and noticed the same thing. Then I started wondering.

But if this subject has already been discussed 100.000 times, please never mind this topic and maybe someone can close it for me?

Thnx! :-)

Don't worry about being new -- and don't let these guys get to you, they don't mean any harm.

Why do great shots get low scores? Simply because people are different, and not everyone likes the same things. Some may not like the assumed processing, some the subject matter and so on. There are not rules to prevent low scores, or to demand comments begiven (although it is strongly encouraged); any such rule would be a slap in the face for being individuals.

The alternative would be to insist on purely technical evaluations of the images, ignoring all emotional impact it may have. But I doubt that is something you would appreciate. Be glad your images strike such a stong chord with the viewers, some may not like it but you can take comfort that it has affected them.

BTW: I visited your profile page. I really like the look of the profile image. All I can say is after visiting your site, the image only improves with a larger size.

Oh, and welcome to DPC -- the quality of your images are a welcome addition to the site.

All I can say is this - if you got low scores because they saw your photo as a threat, be prepared for lots of low scores, because your photos are very much a "threat".

That's a sincere compliment. Your "brown" entry is awesome.

Don't let it bother you. Losers like myself would love to get those kinda scores :)

Thnx for the compliment!

I didn't know this was an old discussion.
It doesn't bother me cause I keep on photographing no matter what, just because it's a great outlet for my ideas. I used to paint and draw but don't have the time for that anymore and I think photography offers so much more.

I just hope that the people who give the low scores (to any one not just me) are sincere about their vote, and don't do it to pump up their own chances.

Don't be sorry. I'm glad to see you here. A ribbon in your first two challenges. Wow! With that record just grow a kevlar overcoat and ignore all the cynical comments that occasionally crop up. I didn't vote on the AA challenge. I did look at all the entries. When I saw yours I knew it'd ribbon. Congrats. That type of quality and especially creativity will do very well here. Listen carefully to the comments made on your challenges. One on your AA image commenter talked about image size. LISTEN to that one if you don't listen to any other.

No no no..... we're just starting to play now. We need to try and aggravate the faux cynical crowd. ;)

Wow! Again! I went to your website. I'm assuming you took the photos there. (Sorry I can't read Dutch.) I think some of the ribbon winning portrait crowd here are in deep trouble.
And on rare special occasions we do have nude challenges.
And some of us sprinkle them in whenever possible. Judi Welcome to DPC!

Edit: Wonder why Judi's profile didn't show up? See Puckzzz, I've been here since May and still do tired newbie stuff!
