ok, well, i know i want one, but i just cant seem to decide on a teleconverter for this damn f717...
of course there's the one by sony with 58mm threads, but the test shots i've seen with it aren't convincing me.. i seem to notice alot of chromatic abberation, and a bit of blurring in the corners..
Now, after some research, i found the TCON-14b to be pretty good, but it's only 1.45x magnification... It's "sister" lense though, the TCON-17 which is 1.7x looks good too, but i cant seem to find some pics of that lense taken with an f717.. I'm really impressed with the tcon-14b with the f717, and if the tcon-17 has the same quality, i'll definatly get it.. At 55mm, it's not very different than the f717's 58mm.. The tcon-14b is 62mm though, which is even better...
arg.. i just want to get this over with, and have something i'll be happy with..
help :)

have you looked in to the Olympus B300?? there no longer made, but a few places still have them new or you can find them on ebay. From what I remember the are going for somewhere in the $200 range, but have a lot of good reviews on them

The tcon17 and the b300 are virtually identical. I have seen test shots from both using the Fuji S602. It is a nice little tele. I'd had bought it if I hadn't already purchased my b300.
Go for the tcon17, you won't be disappointed.

There is a special thread in the Dpreview Sony forum about the F7x7 and the t-con 17, including samples and discussion of features and possible issues.
Here it is.
Use the search forum function to find more samples.
Here: B300vsTCON17vsSonyVCL-HGD1758. In another b-300.com comparisson you can see that the TCON17 seems a slight bit better than the B300.

Last week I ordered the Sony VCL-HGD1758 from provantage.com and it shipped today. Anticipating...
When I get it I'll hopefully have some time to shoot some examples with it and post them here. I'm interested in its ability to blur backgrounds in portraits for some candids at a a wedding this summer, and in helping me out with some track and field shots this summer. An increased flexibility with DOF is the thing I'm after. At a 323mm equivalent, I'm sure it'll be pretty good at both. Might be some CA with it, but as I often shoot for B/W conversion, CA is of little concern. It looks sharper than the Olympus lenses. |

Got my HGD1758 in the mail today. Wow, it's large and heavy. I say again, wow. Way heavier than the camera. Optically it's fantastic - I suspect that it's the exact same glass and coating spec as on the F717. Sony manufactures the Zeiss-designed lenses in Japan so I can't imagine they wouldn't use the same stuff to build these. In the few shots I have taken there is some minor chromatic abberation but it's more due to the sheer volume of glass involved than anything else.
For those who want to do portraiture with the F7x7, get it. Don't think about it, just get it. The DOF is shortened dramatically at the full telephoto setting for a subject at a set distance. I can get nice background blur from a subject distance of even 30 feet. The downside is that the AF hunts quite a bit more at this setting, so manual focus is quite handy here. This shot was taken soon after I unpacked it, forgive the noise as it was taken at ISO 200 in quite low light. Subject distance about 12 feet...unsharp mask and resize only.

wow, that definatly is very nice.. i just couldn't afford that one for now, and i didn't really want to buy it over in the states.. i'm getting the tcon17 for 179$ canadian, while the HGD is 550$ .. you can imagine which i would pick on a lower budget :) i cant wait to spit out my own examples..
