My brain isn't functioning and this would really help me out.
I use Photoshop CS2/3 and i shoot RAW with my 350D.
Thanks SO much.

Could someone send me the same PM. Although I'm not quite ready to send photos to Alamy either, I would like to do so sometime soon. I use Photoshop 7.0.
Thank you |

How about just go to Image Size and set the longest side to 5000-6000 pixels and Bicubic. Done

For my D70 images I go to Image size and do a 175% increase, bicubic smoother, and done.

Always shoot in RAW. (Not in the raw) If you are shooting in jpeg only, I don't know what the results are going to be like or if they are acceptable. Maybe someone else can answer that.
Do not use any sharpening in camera.
Open in Photoshop, with raw plugin.
Leave the image in the 16 bit mode while you make your adjustments. Changing it to 8 bit mode is the FINAL thing to do.
From the Nikon D70 (for example) The native size is 240 ppi and file size is around 17.2 MB
I change the ppi to 300 and increase the percentage by 175% / 190 % using the bicubic smoother. While still in 16 bit mode you should get a file size somewhere around 110 to 120 MB.
Then, and only then do you change the mode to 8 bit. You should now have a file size around the 50 to 60 MB size. Then save as jpeg at maximum size (12).
Do not sharpen your images. If your images are blurred for reasons of camera shake or bad optics then they just are not any good. Toss them.
I've used this method for all my images (72 CDs) and have had no problems.
Happy New Year Everybody.
See you next year.
Cheers
Don

Latest from Alamy on the status of AlamyUpload.
"We are in the process of testing AlamyUpload. We have carried out extensive testing internally and more limited testing using small groups of Alamy Contributors. We are currently making some alterations as a result of the feedback. Before we begin gradually rolling out the facility to all Contributors, we will be testing the system with a group of 150 contributors. If you have been selected to help out in this testing, we will already be in contact with you. Once we are confident that the system works as we would like, we will begin rolling it out to groups of Alamy contributors. Once this process begins we will let you know. As yet we do not have any confirmed timescales."

DPC Newbie here :)
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your D70 Alamy workflow. I was putting my QC shots together when I read it, but I'd been doing the adjustments and saving as JPEG from 8 bit mode. Thanks for putting me on the right track.
I'm currently upsizing using Photoshop 7 as I can't afford CS2 or Genuine Fractals. I do have Aperture, though - any idea if that's a better option for upresing?. I'm just wondering what levels of noise they find acceptable. Images with a fair amount of detail look fine, but skies etc. are scaring me! Could anyone post 100% sections of D70 images which have made it through QC?
As an example, here's a 100% section of one of my JPEGs (ie. as they would be submitted). To me this looks like too much noise, but obviously if they're asking for upresed images then what do they expect.
Thanks in advance,
Becks |

I haven't been through the entire Thread - it's massive ! - but I have a question which I hope doesn't sound too stupid.
You've converted your RAW file to an uncompressed TIF, you've upsized to around 50Mb and it's 8/bit. Now ...
In CS2, when you save, do you save;
Format: TIFF, with Image Compression set to JPEG, Quality 12 (Maximum)
or
Format: JPEG, Quality 12 (Maximum)
It doesn't seem totally clear from the Alamy website (they state, JPG, but then want Byte Order : IBM PC, which you only get with saving as TIFF)
Thanks is advance. |

I just sent my first batch at jpeg 12. it was weird to burn to a CDROM instead of a DVD. We'll see how it goes, it's in their system now.
As for processing in CS/2, I had three batches rejected because of noise that were processed in various ways in CS/2.
Genuine Fractals hvae been very good to me. Not one comment even on noise.

Hi Glyn (bingomatic);
Don't bother with the Tiff step.
Directly from your raw file, after you've changed from 16 bit to 8 bit, just save directly to jpeg (level 12).

Hi Doug (digitalknight)
I don't understand why you would have so many rejections.
If you are using the D70, shooting raw, and not doing any sharpening in camera or in PS, then there should not be any issues.
Cheers

Does anyone see a problem with the levels of noise in the crop I posted earlier in the thread? Just want to get it right before I send off my CD. If anyone has a 100% section of a D70 pic which made it through QC, I'd really like to see it for comparison.
Thanks :) |

rabi9634 - Best of luck with the QC submission. Just so you know the Alamy backlog these days is pretty big so don't expect anything for at least 2 weeks (more likely 3 and possibly 4) after they send you the email saying the QC CD arrived. Everyone had extra time over the holidays to devote to making submission CDs so it's a long process. |

I'm not in any rush. This isn't exactly a 'get rich quick' type of business. I've got a sinking feeling that I forgot to put the "of no commercial value" notification on the envelope with the cd. Almost considering burning another copy of my QC submission and just sending it tomorrow. |
