since we're doing introductions:
i work in real estate, which is one of many things i am interested in. one of the others is the arts, and photography is a new and convenient outlet for that. i'm traditionally a painter sculptor, but it's hard to set aside that kind of time. i also love cars. so, there's all three. (besides my family of course.)
the E-500 is my first SLR of any kind and i hope to learn a lot more about the machine as we go along. i use the Olympus Master software and Photoshop 6. hoping to upgrade to CS2 some time next year, but it's expensive.
who's next? |

Hi
I am Deb. A teacher for 10 years now in a special education school for children with learning and behavioral disorders (Euphemism for "the kid punched the principal" and sent to my school). My certification is in Art Education, but recently I was "encouraged" to become the technology teacher - since the switch, I love it! I have every bell & whistle available to me - now trying to figure it all out in my little lab.
The Sony camera I use is from school and packs more buttons than I understand - I really want to get out of the point & shoot mode. I am sure being here will help that a lot.

hi, i'm a radiologist in charlottesville, va, so i work with digital images all day. i took photography classes every semester throughout high school and had my own black and white darkroom at home. then, i fell out of the habit for lack of funds and equipment. in 2002 i got my first digital camera, and slowly have been taking more pictures. i dove in and got a dslr this july, and haven't looked back since. as you can see in my profile, i have a canon 30d and a 17-85m IS lens. i'm a mac guy, and while i have a g5 imac, for about six months now i've been doing almost all my work on my macbook ("izzy"). i catalog photos in iphoto, and do manipulations (generally on raw files, since i shoot jpg+raw) in adobe lightroom (beta v4.1). i tend to be a minimalist in terms of post-processing, but am not completely averse to it. i have an old version of photoshop, but don't use it. i'm curious about CS3 when it comes out, and am also playing around with the trial version of photomatix pro... probably won't buy a license until i see if it would be a free upgrade for CS3 support (unless i see a challenge where it will really help me, in which case i'll get it asap). |

I am trained Mechanical/Architectural drafter but gave up the fight of trying to play the office politics game. I am now a stay at home mom/stock photographer. (currently starving artist)
I am considering returning to the 'office' to get some income to invest in my photography business. I live near St. Louis. Im 39 and mother of 3 teens. I am so glad to be on this team!

I haven't heard from all people on the list above. I know ColorCarnival started a thread 15-minutes before I posted it. I have sent emails to all the interested parties above. I will check back this evening. |
Coolies - I am in for sure! Again - my concern was that since I was inviting someone else to join, i did not want to rob someone of their space.
Justa - thanks for taking the lead! Very much looking forward to being on your team!

Hello all - glad to meet the Motley crew.
Let's see - up until 2 years ago I was always taking pics with a film point and shoot and you know - when you have kids - you take about a million pics in a day. Then I got my first DSLR-ish kind of camera - the kind that lets you add some depth to a picture. So I got the bug BUT really didn't learn anything about my camera until this past August when I took a semester class. I am hooked. Even have some photos on some stock sites - made $2.00 so far! Whoo hoo lol Thank God I have a day job.
So my day job - I teach math and physics at a community college part time. So to give my brain a break - I take pictures! I'm addicted now because of this site.
I look forward to working with you guys! Everyone has an interesting collection so far. I'm gonna have to go and leave some comments now. :o)

WOW! This is great :-)
I'm anxious to create "Trading Cards" and a "Team Logo"
Give us an intro ColorCarnival, how'd you pick that name? And PhotoInterest
We could make a team. I do like to be fair and do keep my word since I value responsability and 99%-honesty in others. Although I've seen here how chaotically the real-world is at this team-marketplace. Yes I analyse too, much, it's part of my nature/skill/title.
My friends at work in the MAC Dept. look down upon amateaur software like PaintShop Pro. I kind-of like their latest "Photo" edition version 11. Although I've found only one set of filters that I can't do better then in CS2. They gave me a black T-Shirt saying "Creative yet Logical", I thought they were referring to me (grin-lal, "laughing a little").
Metatate got me interested in dpc last Jan, and I submitted my first picture in April 9th my birthday came in 15th. I've worked with him (on the same floor, but in IS-Dept., over 4 yrs. I know I must have had some influence, in critiquing and suggestions. We learned from each other.
At one time I wanted to be an Architect, but got into machinist-etc., then a programming career ("Progrmmer/Analyst", etc.) on a PC, and been doing it for over twenty years.
That Southern Gentleman emailed me that we pick a slot (1 to 24) after entering the names, if it is filled, he'll email me to let me know. Then we try it all over again. Seems to me like some unfair lottery-typ-of-thing. Hope we get in an available slot in time!!!??
See: WPL-Basics I'm not sure what "filled/reserved" means?
My Patterns II is currently 4.9745/157 votes, but my Harsh Environments is 5.1531/98 votes. I don't always type this much. |

Okay you can be the drummer with shades.
I would like to blow them up to the typical "Trading Card" size and include real photogs faces replacing the smileys. Maybe a transparent smiley or some on the bottom left frame.
I will have to see how much animation I can get and still have a .gif within size limits. I'm not sure of the size limits. |

I would like to hear from Photointerest. how about an introduction please?
(drummer with shades plays a drum roll...)
I checked everyones portfolios, camera functions, etc.
I was 20 minutes from downtown Toronto and didn't bring my camera to this new Christmas Dinner so I took some group shots with an HP Camera very similar to PhotoInterests. I think your camera can stitch panorama shots in the camera, just get a cheap/Light full size tripod and let it roll!
DSterners's Sony can do Infrared shots, also in-camera feature. Search out some of those here.
My camera can overlay any two images in the camera, I almost did one. Now I've read the manual and know how. I built a large fire in the Park barbecue grill, using dry branches and hand sanitizer. I was going to superimpose it on a Fireman/Ladder statue at the Lkwd. Fire Dept.
Didn't get it done in time, but am no longer a Pro procrastinator.
All of us can contibute successfully in the WPL4.
It's like bowling, if you don't get a strike, you get a second ball and can make a spare. Each frame (weekly-challenge) you can try two balls or photos, or you can go shoot picture and drink shots at a Bowling Ally. I was a bit shy at first of shooting and flashing in public, but got over it. Many people enjoy the attention.

exactly! we all have potential... with encouragement and persistence, we can do great! top 4 score, so we don't have to worry about one or two people having and off week because they tried to be bold in their submission yet didn't connect with the voters. can't wait... this is going to be good... and a lot of fun! |

ok so what challenge are you guys entering next? I'm working on the centered one right now and it does not require much thought to look at it. My battery one is going south because people are too literal lol. I have found that people don't like to have to think about an image. It has either got to be in your face or "in focus". (I am laughing with myself right now.) I'll show you guys my pic later - you will probably think I am way out there when you see it lol

Hi Everyone:
I'm coming late to the table with my intro, but I'm glad to be a part of this team!
I've always been snapping shots with cameras, although I've been used to 35mm, so digital is all fairly new to me.
I actually just got my HPR927 for my 50th birthday this July from my daughter and husband and am still learning its many functions. I'm far from knowing what the heck to do with it all! *smile* But, I'm learning as I go.
I'm really more of an artist with paints and graphite than I am a photographer, but, I snap shots to use for my paintings and especially pieces for murals. This is giving me focus to want to take photos and the real reason why I'm participating in these challenges. It MAKES me work at it! *grin*
Outside of this....what pays my bills.....is doing books and handling the paper trail end of an electrical contracting company. I'm also a Psychic Consultant and run two websites.
Colorcarnival got me introduced to DPChallenge as a boot up the rear to get myself going with photography. I'm grateful to her for giving me the boot, even though I'm still "ouching" *wink*. I actually went out and bought a new tripod yesterday as my old one was broken. My husband is pulling his hair out by the roots as I'm constantly jumping from one form of art to another. Awwww, well.........he'll get over it.
And, as for this group.......nice to meet you all! Looking forward to challenges with you all. I'm currently working on a shot for the Centered challenge. I need LIGHT!!!! We haven't had a spot of sunshine for weeks here now and it's getting pretty hard to get "natural light" shots. My "studio lighting" (laughing here) consists of some desk lamps and halogen bulbs. *she hangs her head in shame*.
Ok, off to work on my shot with whatever daylight I can get through a window and some set up lighting before it leaves. |

photointerest... as for lighting, two days ago i just got two clamp-on lamps at home depot with some daylight balanced (5500K) bulbs. so far it's working great. i may go for something fancier down the road, but this is a great $20 solution! more info is available on this thread that i started, including the ~$100 solution i was considering (for continuous lighting) and a $300 high-end solution (flash setup). i'm happy with home depot for now. |

I am also working with a home depot studio. It works good for now. I dream of having a real studio someday. Till then, it does alright!

PhotoInterest. Use your tripod on something that doesn't move too much.
Then try longer exposures, 2, 4, 6, even 30+ seconds. It takes a few trial-and-delete shots (= a lot of time). There is always "enough" light, but you may not get the exact effect.
Joey Lawrence used clamp lamps, I've got 5 or 6 (tried new GE Spectrum bulbs), many here shop Home Depot. I bought my background paper hanging rods there,
Make alternate plans, go with the flow of available-light or create/add some. We had some sun today, so I thought I could do some sunlight photos, 45-minutes later, in came the Natural Fog-F/X, then later sporadic sun, then mostly cloudy. Even public lights in parks and parking lots/garages offer light.
If shooting in raw, you can always increase the exposure (better to under-expose to get more-colors), even make a dark .jpg bright. Or play around with adjusting Levels/Curves, but not too drastically.
To stop motion use a strobe/flash. You can draw you name in 15-sec with a small light, and at last 5-sec shine a spot light, on you sitting in a chair, flick it on/off on an extension cord with a switch. I've seen one similar in a Light-Challenge done with a camera flash at the end.
The Abduction
Many pictures have been done, if yours has just 2-4 main characters/elements, and technique is 100%, and tells a story/message, that's easily understood, and appeals to the majority of the audience here, it will score good. If it says WOW, not OW, it will place top-10.
Please READ-AND-PRINT THESE LINKS (in order of importance):
I did a dpc forums search for "recipe for winning ribbons"
1) Win a Ribbon! (long post) - (By scalvert, he only has 27 ribbons )
2) The Unauthorized Beginner's Guide to DPC #27-is controversial, none are steadfast-rules, some humorous.
3) The Box and Creativity
Humor
4) The Legend of Chit Rabbinton
I'm good at shooting my mouth, relaying what I've picked up here.
I will talk less, spend the time, to show more results.
