I am running msconfig and was wondering what are the essential files that need to be run on startup? |

Essentials varies from one computer setup to another. Essential device drivers may load certain services at startup. Like your antivirus program, or your backup program, or your file sharing services, etc... Anyway, here is a good place to start for your reference. Just compare the process you have and see if you really need them.
win task list |

I am interested in the essentials, for now. I remember seeing a list of something like four files that are essential on startup. I'm running XP Home SP2 on the machine I'm checking.
thanks for the reference url, btw. |

I find that the best way to audit stuff is to get the computer running, bring up task manager and go to the processes list tab, then type the exact name of each process into google - like "CTHELPER.EXE".
Normally the first few responses from google will be security sites listing what the process does and whether or not you should try to disable it.
