I have a short tripod right now and it is killing me. I want a tripod that can stand taking long exposures outside, macro. I take alot of moon/airplane/sky photos, so I need it to be tall enough I can stand upright without "crawling under the camera". The basic swivel, tilt, and good base. No more than $175 for the budget. Anyone got any ideas thanks!

I understand, fellow 6'4" person. I have a Phoenix Condor which isn't that great a model, but it's the tallest I've found and doesn't kill my back to use it. It has a quick release base, but you can never quite adjust to frame the picture how you want. It's also under $100.

Okay well im 6 Foot so if youre having issues at 6 foot 4 you must be shoppping in a japanese store haha... anyways

I have an elcheepo 35 Dollar tripod that goes from 2 feet to way above my head. The company makes models ranging from 35 to 500 dollars the models at 100 and up mainly are just sturdier and provide better vibration resistance withthe same exact funxtion of the 35 dollar model.

Cant remember who makes it but you can find Many Makes and Models including sony's ultra electronic 500 dollar unit from any consumer store like Circuit City r Best Buy.

SOlves your height problem but i guess some photo freaks might not like shopping at those places.

i got a nice tripod off ebay, from the seller amvona. at-828 is the model. they have many others. this works for me (6') and at times is a tad too tall - with the legs fully out and the center fully in (as it should be). It has a vertical pistol grip type head on it (love it!) that adds some height.

yes, a lot of tripods, to save weight or cost i suppose, are a tad too short unless you extend the center column, and that reduces teh stabilty you wanted a tripod for in the first place.

long exposure shots require a solid tripod, so don't cheap out.

I'm 6'2" and use a Manfrotto 3021Pro legs with a 3047 3 way head. You'll have to put the center column up if you want to stand under it. But it doesn't quite fit your budget. You can get something similar for about $175 (search B&H for "manfrotto 3021" and look at the kits)

Also, you can use the battery grip to give you an extra couple of inches on the tripod. (Only works in landscape orientation though :-)

I just got an email from Amvona. This tripod looks a lot like the one I have, and is cheaper: //www.amvona.com/v7/shop/?page=shop/flypage&view=1&product_id=2068

I don't know the quality of Amvona's tripods, but I bought a 5 in 1 reflector from them and it seems to be good quality.
