Insert system disk in drive...
how do i get it to use the cd rom drive for this? it didn't give me an option for switching to d:
edit: found a boot disk in trunk, did the "start up with cdrm support" so we'll see where this leads.

You'll need to check your BIOS settings. When you turn on the machine, before it even tries to boot from the hard drive/CD, whatever, you should see a splash screen of some sort (usually with the laptop manufacturer logo). It will also usually say down near the bottom "Hit Delete to enter Setup" or something along those lines. The 2 most common keys to get into setup are Delete and F2. Hit the key it tells you to, and you will enter the BIOS Setup. Somewhere in there will be an option to set the Boot order. Make sure the CD drive is tried before the hard drive. |

You're going to have to change the boot order of the drives.
According to one site I found: You can access the BIOS in any Toshiba by holding down the "Esc" key immediately after turning the laptop on. It will say "Error. Please press F1 and check system settings". Press F1 and you will enter the BIOS.
Once you get into the BIOS menus, there should be somewhere to change disk boot order.

You have to get to your BIOS and put the CD drive at the top of the boot sequence. The trick is getting to the bios, as not all machines have the same method.
During boot, keep tapping on your Delete key, hopefully you'll get into the bios. Keep an eye on the boot screens, as sometimes the method to get into the bios scrolls or flashes by.
If Delete doesn't work for me I use my own, special, patented method. During boot I run my finger from the Esc key, down all the F keys to the Delete key, repeatedly, like a piano player. Pretty fizzucked up, eh? But I'm sure to hit that damn key somewhere! :-)

the cdrm drive sounds like its working so ill give it some time but can anyone figure out why this might be happening? Or can someone possibly recommend another version of linux i should download?

Since the machine is older, perhaps xubuntu may be a better option... you can get to it from Ubuntu's main site.

BTW, Linuxquestions.org might be a better source of help.

Sounds like it could be a makefile error. I would re-download Ubuntu and burn a new CD. At least that is where I would start.
