I am looking to purchase a new monitor. The one I'm seriously considering at the moment is a 19" wide format style flat panel lcd. Having no experience with the wide format, I was wondering if there are any drawbacks I should be aware of.
Anyone have experience with the wide format and how do you like it for photo editing and viewing? I wouldn't use it for watching dvds or such.

just be sure to research what you buy as you will often get what you pay for, pick say 3 brands that appeal to you and compare specs between them, esp the screen resolution, I personally buy Samsung and currently own 5 of them and recently got an Acer 24" wide screen LCD and love it even though it is a little on the bright side compared to the rest of the monitors but has been great so far over the past 10 months...

To a certain extent, I agree with that. I am not, however, of the mind that the most expensive item is automatically the best quality item. I try to do some homework for purchases I make and get the best item I can get for the budget I have to work with.

That's good. Just as a matter of comparison, you may want to consider the Dell 20" widescreen LCD monitor. It's comparitively sized and priced. Dell widescreen LCDs have an excellent reputation (I use the 24" at home and work). |

on black friday i got my fist LCD, a 19" wide one, been using a 19" CRT.
I like wide - wasn't sure i was going to, but it's nice in many ways. Physically, the 19W is wider but shorter than my 19 CRT - the square measurement on my 19CRT is about 14 wide and 10.75 tall (was running at 1024x768)
The LCD (samsung syncmaster CX931BW) is in reality 16.25 wide and about 10.0 tall at 1440x900. Got this monitor at bestbuy for $129, reg $250 or so. 2 ms response time and 2000:1 contrast - a very nice monitor and a decent price at $250 and a steal at $129. There is a similar but lesser spec'd monitor so beware and get the better one (the lesser is 4ms and 400:1 contrast I believe).
wide is nice in PS - you can move the palettes off the pic and get more editing space.
I actually kept my 19CRT and now run dual monitors - really nice!

Well, I spent my Christmas money (Thanks, Dad) and ordered the new monitor today. (The one I linked to above.)
The reviews I found for the monitor all said that it was an excellent value, with it actually out-performing the expectations they had for the price. I'll let you know how I like it when it's delivered next week. I haven't bought new computer equipment (unless you count a wireless mouse) in probably 4 years or so.
I noticed that this monitor was failing when I started getting prints back that were quite a bit lighter than what showed on my screen. It will be interesting to view my latest edited shots on the new screen and see how bad they really look! |
