So I am trying to sell my gear on ebay to pay for my newly purchased 20D..

So the auction has a few minutes left and everything is going fine and dandy... until..

At the very last minute I get a couple bids from people outside my shipping area with ZERO feedback and outrageous bids over my "BUY IT NOW" price..

I suspect foul play..

The buy it now was 650... the highest bid was 950.. WHAT?? I don't get it..

Why can't people use the system as it is intended to be used..

EBAY LINK HERE

Since then I have used a "Second Chance Offer" to the highest bidder in the USA.

What should I do?

Methinks you suspect correctly. I have no idea why someone would choose to disrupt an auction, other than to try to scam you with an outside-ebay offer to buy. Relist it.

I dunno - I have been trying to get a couple of things lately and I just get outbid by crazy people in the last 2 minutes. Good to see it happens on the sell side also.

<=== Has a well-founded mistrust for e-bay. And I'm not just talking about the scammers that use it.

You mention you've done the "Second Chance" offer? Already?

You have a decent offer from bob3323 in the US. Second chance goes to him, yes?

What I don't get is why it went past the "Buy it now" price in the first place. bob3323 could have bought it for that...

I've only sold a few things, but I set it (in PayPal I think) to not allow bids from people outside your shipping area (United States).

In the end it will all work out for you.

you might suspect correctly, but I would immediately contact the 'winner' and see if you get a response......unfortunately you will get in trouble yourself if you relist and the other ebayer actually wants to buy it.

Maybe you got a great sale??? once one bid goes on it cancels the buy-it-now price, sometimes allowing you to get a higher price.

Ebay won't let you just relist that item...and if you make a second chance offer without giving the winner a chance then YOU are breaking the rules.

good luck...,I recently had a problem with a sale, and even though I used ebay to dispute the bid, I had to give them 7 days to respond to the dispute....eventually they woke up and paid.

My thoughts exactly.. That's why I am not banking on it.. Will re-list soon in a couple of days when all this hopefully pans out..

You should have sent the buyer an invoice asking for payment.

If they had paid, all well and good. If not, report to ebay as as non paying bidder. You could then have relisted free of charge.

If you have a BUY IT NOW price and an auction, it keep going as long as people bid. Normally the first bid, takes off the BUY IT NOW option.

I've dispatched an e-mail to the 'winner' and 'bob' But I believe I have enough evidence to "Second Chance" it already.. My listing specifically said ships to USA only... The 'winner' says they are in the UK

It is possible they misread the listing and are unaware of US only terms. AS a seller, you have to establish this and, if possible offer them the option to buy and pay p&p. To just ignore them cos they failed to follow your terms, could have your account suspended.

My guess is that they would send you a cashier's check for more than the amount and ask you to send the difference back to them, classic scam and this would be the perfect setup for it.

ok...missed the point on the UK.

I was just thinking that you were jumping the gun because of a last minute bid from a newbie.....I still think you have to 'report' it somewhere to justify your second offer.

Yes, I know I was quick on the draw and I have e-mailed both parties..

But my fear is confirmed when I seem to always reading about Ebay scams.. Cameras seem to be a big target for scams..

I'll just see what happens..

Whoa... BOB just sent me payment in full..

Wow! You never can tell with ebay buyers...usually more sense than money.

good for you, now lets hope newbie doesnt....because if he has intention of completing this sale (and yes I remember you didn't want to ship out of USA), YOU could be accused of scamming as you could have just cost him the ability to bid on a different auction while you revoked the one he won!

I guess I hear of LOTS of scams, but you can't be scammed if you don't let yourself be scammed... maybe a bit naive, but thats the way I do business..

Josh - It appears you need to update your profile now that the 300D is history. :D

Very true..

Some people get caught up in the excitement of the auction and pay more than something is worth just for the thrill of winning. Happens in live auctions too, usually to a greater degree.

I've had people do the same on my auctions, bidding well over the price they could buy it new.

I'm not sure that's quite true. Many people are scammed and never realize it.

I personally suspect that the UK buyer will try to force you to refund him a check that is supposedly already in the mail. If he claims he won the auction, he will hold that over your head to force you to issue a refund. Then, you may well be involved in some type of money laundering or goodness knows what particular activity.

If I were in your shoes, the immediate step I would take is to contact Ebay and advise them of the situation. They apparently have staff that work just on these kind of things...

Good advice

For the future...

Unwelcome and malicious bids
Requiring immediate payment
Canceling a second chance offer
