This is the best post ever! Thank you Cindi!
It's funny...I've been talking about trying to turn my spare bedroom into a small studio...and apparently my husband has been listening to me... He got me lights for Christmas!!! The thing is, I don't even know what they are called, how to use them...etc. I'm SO new at all this! But, I can tell you that the two lights I got look just like the softbox and the umbrella in your studio pic! :) I haven't even attempted using them yet, for fear of breaking them or something!

:D Oh Canada!! it hides some clutter and sometimes finds its way into a shot or two -- I have a Dutch flag on the other side.

You have a most excellent setup that I am quite jealous of...
For me, I just picked up a backdrop stand, one Alien Bee light, along with the umbrella and stand and one reflector that would be hand-held at this time...
My roll of paper is only just over 4 feet in length though. (I am mostly going to be shooting little ones to start.)
I have a few clamping lights that I will be working with until I can pick up another light or two for highlights and a softbox.
I'll post some from a shoot I have setup to happen in a few weeks.
Post more of your work. With that setup you should be shooting almost everyday! |

I do shoot almost every day. Would rather be in the studio than almost anywhere. I have clients this afternoon - a father & 2 teens; I'll post a few shots after, including some wide (showing the lights) shots if I don't forget. The new 17-55 will make that easier! :)

Thank you, Tammy. Someone was kind enough to give 2 years of their life to teaching me - the least I can do is pass on some of what I learned. I'm happy to help.

I have 2 AB 400s (both on the left in that image) and one AB800 (sporting the softbox). I'm finding more and more lately that I need 2 bg lights for even coverage, so if I did it over I would buy 4 AB400s. The AB800 is too powerful for that space anyway, I never use it at full power.
Now if I were traveling on location with them, I would go for 800s so I could light ANY space, but my little studio only needs 400s. |
Question:
My husband is making noise like he is going to buy me lights to replace my JTL's that wont do anything but work in modeling. He had me build my own Alien Bees kit. I built it with (4) AB400's, and (2)ea AB400's & AB800's. If you had the choice, which way would you go. I don't have a permanant studio (yet), but I have plenty of space for setting up.

Unless you plan to set up a studio the size of a warehouse, you can do fine with 4 400s.

I have been thinking about purchasing the Busy Bee kit for the past 3 months. This thread has convinced me that it is exactly what I want. Now if I Can just convince my wife it is exactly what I need, I will have the set in a few weeks.

So I was without clients and decided to take the new lens to the beach. Keep in mind, I'm certainly NOT a landscape photographer - but this lens makes me want to be!! Some awesome shots today, here are a few....

LOL guess I better stick to studio work cause my landscapes got almost no notice at all :)
Just shot my 'Hostile' entry in the studio and loving it!! Used the new lens and a neighbor. Can't wait to show the how-to.
I would love to see shots of other home-studios.. please, post them :)

well, here's a pic I took a while back... we've now gotten rid of both those tables (and chairs) and swapped them out for a small wooden stool, an old computer chair and a rectangular folding table. (which I might add still takes up a 1/4 of our entire apartment, lol)
not nearly as nice a setup as Cindi's, but maybe one of these days : )
(one can dream, right?)
