Well, as the thread title makes abundantly clear, I wasn't all too confident; posed portraits are not my strong suit. Still, I was thrilled that my daughter asked me to do her senior portrait. Here's the shot that we both felt was the best of the shoot. We'll probably submit a slight crop of this for her yearbook picture.
I'd welcome thoughts on the image itself, and also on ideas for cropping. It looks like they use a 2.5 inch by 3.5 inch final printed size.
Edit: Here's a toned version...
She wanted to see both before deciding on which to go with. I really liked the color version, but the toned one is growing on me! Opinions much appreciated.

looks different then the normal senior portrait but it's absolutely beutiful. great job. it's much more dynamic with that cool perspective, shallow DOF, and natural comfortable expression she's not likely to have had with anyone else. nicely done. |

Pretty girl, nice composition, and the lighting accentuates her face. It looks fine to me.

Definitely untraditional, which is a good thing from my perspective.
Since you did ask for advice, the only discussion point for me would be the fact that here left eye (right of frame) may be slightly out of focus. Of course it's hard to tell in the web sized image, so everything may be fine. I also realize the depth of field is very shallow, but in an image like this the eyes are everything.
Great shot and thanks for sharing!

LOL, good luck with that! I guess I can't really complain, though there was interest from older guys (read 20 year-olds when she was 16) which did not please us.
In the end, all you can do is steer 'em in the right direction; being overbearing is just gonna make 'em into rebels. She's been dating someone her age now for 6 months, and he's a good kid. Just don't tell him I said so ;-) |

I like the pose and the lighting. Nice shot, i prefer the colour version, which is unusual for me. My only gripe is that it would have been great to use a slightly smaller aperture, then you would have gotten her whole face in focus rather than her mouth slipping out.
But it's a great shot nonetheless and i wouldn't have any worries about reccomending you for posed portait shots.
Well done.

Thanks all!
It looks like we are undecided on the color version vs. a toned version... we are definitely going with this shot; it will definitely stand out from the rest! |

Both of those shots are awesome and I can see why you are having such a hard time deciding.
I really love the toned version but do keep in mind most yearbooks are in BW except for the seniors. Will she be the only one with a two tone photo?
Does she prefer to be in color like all other seniors?

Hee hee, she actually *asked* for B+W! We discussed it and she really loved the idea of a toned version. She loves to be different. |

I love your B/W toning - these are both great and you might find your arm twisted more often once they are shown.
