I just successfully bartered a very large discount on the catering for my daughter's wedding. I sent a link to my PBase site to the caterer and asked if she was in need of any photographic work that I might be able to handle in exchange for a reduction in the catering price.
She was thrilled (of course, I haven't taken the photos yet!) and wants some photos of her staff in uniform. We talked about it for awhile (she knows I'm a hobbyist, not a pro) and came up with some ideas that I think will work perfectly for her needs.
It will reduce the price of the catering by not quite half (her suggestion, not mine. That was more than I would have hoped for!) My daughter (who was somewhat mortified that I was trying to negotiate a price reduction) was really surprised that it worked! I told her when she starts living on a real world budget, she'll learn that every penny counts.
We can so easily SPEND money on our hobby. How have you creatively used your photography to save money? |

Dental work. My dentist loves my photographs. He has large prints mounted in the ceiling above his chairs, so they are what you see when you are reclined and looking up.

My husband and I run a garage door business. We recently put an addition on our house. One of the subs does smart house wiring (internet, cable, cat5, etc) I traded pictures of their work and products for use on their web site, and they wired all my rooms to the smart panel for us. I have also traded doors and install for finish work, including my new staircase. Its a win-win for all parties involved.

I refuse to accept the government's right to tax me if I accept vegetables from your garden in exchange for putting up half of them as preserves for you.

Yes, barter value is considered income but you still get to deduct expenses. It's only taxable if the expenses are less than the barter value. Anyway, what paper trail is there for the government to follow in case of an audit? It was just an exchange of gifts, right? ;o) |

lol, I'm the accountant, my expenses generally are more than my income ;-) just remember..if you put it in writing......I'll hush now :-)

edit to note: my reason for comment, I've seen some crazy things happen due to 'casual' comments. IF the IRS were to question "unreported income" due to barter and you spent 20k on lawyer and proved you in fact met some exceptions and didn't owe a tax on supposed barter goods, do you think IRS will pay your legal fees? NO.
simply inserting word or two of caution here...sorry to have mushed anyone's veggies

Then don't write it down...
And remember, you are never, but never, no matter how friendly they may seem, "speaking casually" with ANYONE from the IRS.

I do that alot, for design/publishing work I do or other stuff. I just did it for a big design/publishing job I did. I did all of the lady's photography mainly photographing her clients and designing the book. Out of that I got 10 pages in the book (my own section) and also I got an exhibition for my photographs coming in 2007 that she will do for me.

i haven't bartered any photography that i know of, but one of my student's mom does framing so . . .she framed one of my odd sized prints for x number hours of tutoring.
We both thought we got a pretty good deal out of it. |

I did several photo shoots for one of my TAs, who is working on her PhD dissertation. She get's to use the processed shots in her dissertation and related presentations, and I get photographer's credit in every publication, and may well get a showing out of it :-)
