In light of the proverbial can of worms I've opened up in my "Loose Interpretation of Home" thread, I propose we have a Literal and a Figurative challenge. Here's what YourDictionary.Com says:
lit·er·al
(ltr-l)
adj.
Being in accordance with, conforming to, or upholding the exact or primary meaning of a word or words.
Word for word; verbatim: a literal translation.
Avoiding exaggeration, metaphor, or embellishment; factual; prosaic: a literal description; a literal mind.
Consisting of, using, or expressed by letters: literal notation.
Conforming or limited to the simplest, nonfigurative, or most obvious meaning of a word or words.
fig·u·ra·tive
(fgyr--tv)
adj.
Based on or making use of figures of speech; metaphorical: figurative language.
Containing many figures of speech; ornate.
Represented by a figure or resemblance; symbolic or emblematic.
Of or relating to artistic representation by means of animal or human figures.

The only problem is that there are usually many "literal" interpretations. For instance - at the same site, yourdictionary.com, it has 10 definitions for "home." Here are some of the definitions:
"-A place where one lives; a residence.
-The physical structure within which one lives, such as a house or apartment.
-A dwelling place together with the family or social unit that occupies it; a household.
-An environment offering security and happiness.
-A valued place regarded as a refuge or place of origin.
-The place, such as a country or town, where one was born or has lived for a long period.
The native habitat, as of a plant or animal.
-The place where something is discovered, founded, developed, or promoted; a source.
-A headquarters; a home base."
Would you have to then pick one of these? I'm not trying to argue with you!!! I'm just saying that one of the beauties of photography is that it brings out our human creativity - and that makes "literal" challenges a bit difficult unless SEVERE restrictions were put on subject matter. So - the challenge would have to state "DO NOT take pictures of ANYTHING except for the dwelling place or household in which you and/or your family live." Even then some people would be able to say "my house is the planet earth." You know what I mean? |

Just a suggestion to "clear the air." Not meant to cause another controversy. As I stated before ninerfan, I actually liked your picture, as well as the other winners. It would be nice though, if we could have a challenge, for once, where everyone follow the guidelines to the letter, and everyone vote based on those guidelines. Some people actually go through a lot of trouble to get a shot that meets the "challenge." Otherwise make this an "anything goes" site.

That's cool, Russel! I'm not trying to challenge you - I understand... but then I think the challenge descriptions must be worded with extreme accuracy for it to work. The home challenge simply said, "Photograph the place you call home -- and be creative doing it!" - which probably has hundreds of available interpretations... but if the description went into detail on what was OK and what was not, then that would make sure more people would have to stick to those specifics. Is that what you mean? |

Great shot ninerfan and congrats. The majority has ruled it represents Home to them. :)

That's a fair statement ninerfan. Maybe we should have more detailed theme guidelines. I hope the site council/administation takes this into consideration. Would make things better here IMO.
I see you're one for one. That's great. And a first place finish to boot. You're someone to watch; I bet we could all learn a thing or two from you.

That really is a great photo ninerfan, although I did not score it very high. I gave it a five, because I believe it did not quite fit the challenge description.
Scab-lab, Have you ever seen a tame goat lead sheep into a slaughter house? The sheep all follow the front sheep, who in turn follows the goat. The sheep can smell and hear what's coming, but they all follow that goat to their deaths. What I'm trying to say is, sometimes "majority rules" can get you into very tight spots.
Following Home Sweet Home, I think we should stay away from literal challenges as far as we can.

My point is, although you didnt feel it fit the challenge description, there were many people here that felt it did. Following a sheep to the slaughterhouse is not a good analogy to this issue. People vote blindly, not knowing who the photo belongs to, nor what scores it has received until voting ends. Nobody knows the outcome till the end, so if a particular shot wins, its because the voters put it there. The beauty of this place is we can all vote the way we like, there is no right or wrong way. Cheers!

I really don't feel like being drawn into this debate again. I know what you meant with your original post, but I still believe that enough voters have been influenced into certain voting patterns by the "enlightened" or "artistic" few, that the analogy of the Judas Goat fits. They might not be able to see how the others are voting, but there have been so many threads which criticize bad scores given to good photographs because they didn't meet the challenge, that these voters have been conditioned into giving, at worst, average (ie 5) scores for photos that do not meet the challenge.
