I am planning to rig up some lighting in my basement. I've decided to go cheap for now, and rig up something myself. I'm going to pick up 2 workshop lights and mount umbrellas to it (thanks to the great post I've read earlier). My questions are...
1) What kind of umbrella should I buy, in terms of size and color.
2) Are there any know issues with using workshop lighting as opposed to actual studio ligting (like heat, fire, melting etc.)
3) What kind of material should I use for a white, inexpensive background
Thanks in advance for the help. |

1) silver would be best, white would be good too.
2) those halogen work lights get extremely hot, keep them from touching any fabric.
3) A large sheet of white paper or a plain white sheet with no patterns.

I use two 500 watt shop lights with a defuser(piece of foggy shower panel) hanging 8 inches off the front.
I use a white poster board you can get at walmart or any department store for under $2.00. It is good to buy a couple of black and of white.
Good luck!!

I find white poster board good also but the black I find gives a purplish cast when photographed (no matter what light I use or what white ballance setting). I guess it's one of my camera's limitations. Trying to solve this problem in PhotoShop only puts everything else out of whack.
Black velvet is supposed to be really good. It'll probably be my next photography related purchase.

There is a spray paint called blackboard paint that puts a nice matte finish on posterboard, eliminating the purple cast -- I bought some at Walmart. |

Thanx Clues, I'm gonna try that. It's gonna be cheaper than velvet for sure.
