Ok, I admit it, I am bored in these dark days before christmas. So I was browsing the net a bit to find this:
//bcnranking.jp/flash/09-00011835.html Oops, yes, that is in Japanese. What is shows are the sales trends and figures for the Japanese models in Japan.
The first graph you see is not important.
The table after that shows top selling models. The EOS400D is in the lead there, followed by a load of Nikon models. Do you see the 30D at the bottom, well outsaled by the D200? It clearly needs replacement.
The next graph shows sales volume by brand over the last half year.
The blue line is Canon, the red line is Nikon, the light blue one is Sony, the brown one is Pentax and the purple one is Olympus.
This graph shows that the introduction of the D40 pushed Nikon ahead of Canon and the lack of Canon's new introductions caused a steap decline in sales.
Sony had a high with the introduction of the alpha but the sales dropped down to a really low market share. Not what Sony had expected.
Pentax is doing well and has a christmass increase. The only reason why they aren't higher is because they cannot meet demand.
Olympus has a market share below 3%, the 4/3 system is as good as dead in Japan.
It would be interesting to see the sales figures for Europe (the biggest market) and the US. Anyone got links?

From the amount of advertising they do here in Japan, I would have thought Canon would still be in the lead, but they've certainly dropped off in the last month. BTW, the graph shows fortnightly sales.
I was in Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara yesterday (getting some filter stuff) and a man was in the process of buying a Pentax K10D. But the local chain camera store is out of stock of them and requests customers to preorder. |

The 30D needed a replacement before it was released. It should have been called the 20Dn.
The 30D, should have had the XTi's 10mp, dust removal sensor, as well as the spot metering.
Then it'd have been something. Right now, it is an upgradeless camera. In otherwords, if you need a camera fine you'll buy a 30D (though right now I'd go with the XTi over the 30D. And that saves me nearly $400). But there was zero reason really for a present 20D user to upgrade to a 30D.
Spot Metering was basically the one real substantial offering. I hope the 30D languishes. Maybe it'll keep Canon from being so stupid in the future. They should have just waited the few extra months and then released the 30D with the XTi. It would have done wonders for their sales.
I will not buy another camera unless it has dust-removal. |

Spot metering + 2.5" LCD display = better than 20D. Better enough to make me trade up? No. But still a better camera. If they had included the dust-free technology and the higher Mp sensor of the 400xti I'd be in the 30D now.
One DOES have to wonder what they were thinking...

| That 400D sensor and dust ridder technology needs to mature. |

I bought my son a toy, the S3IS, for Christmas and was seriously looking at the 5D.... The sales person who I have dealt with over the last few years advised me to wait. According to him production of the 5D has already been stopped and it will be "replaced". He was mum on the detail questions I shot at him.
Has Canon lost their competative advantage? I think so. Will I consider crossing? Sure, why not, but Nikon will have to convince me they have the staying power to outdo Canon in the long run. |
