Fresh off the presses:

Japanese optical-products maker Hoya will buy digital-camera manufacturer Pentax in a $771 million deal that underscores the quickening pace of consolidation in the world's second-largest economy. The new company, to be called Hoya Pentax HD, intends to focus on medical products, such as endoscopes and intraocular lenses, an area that is expected to grow as the populations in many countries around the world begin to age rapidly. It will also allow the combined company to concentrate on optical lenses and digital-camera parts businesses. Earlier this year, Sony bought the digital camera unit of Konica Minolta Holdings to bolster its own offerings of advanced cameras.

Well if it's good enough for Sony then it's good enough for Hoya.. I'm happy as long as we don't get cross breeds developing like

Kellogs Canon or
Cadburys Nikon.

LOL

Hoya>Tokina>Kenko is part of the same company.

One of the pre merge results is the Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye zoom for Canon and Nikon mounts. Future Pentax/Tokina developed lenses will be available in other camera mounts. Little more expensive but still available.

So this merge is good for the other camera companies too.

Wonder what this will do to the 645D. Last I knew it was waiting for a new 30 mega pixel chip.

This should make Canon and Nikon owners happy- they should finally be able to put some Pentax glass on those things :)

BTW- I love the 10-17 fisheye.

Just got mines a couple of days ago. Doing some testing then send away for the rebate :)

Yes, I saw this on the news last night. However, we didn't have the news set to English, so I just thought it was a merger rather than a takeover seeing that the Pentax name remains. I don't know what the HD stands for.
I understood that it will happen next autumn.

I noticed that you'd gotten one. Need to get off my butt and get some entries. At least for a short time I can say "I have the best shot take with the 10-17"

Doesn't $771 million seem cheap? (I can't believe I just said that).

Pentax apperently doesn't have a lot of assets or patents or they just have big debts.

Next merger that I expect is Fuji & Nikon.

I think that would be a great one.

Fuji, I believe, manufactures all their own CCD's etc...

The only question would be the name FujiKon or Nikoji?

I'd like to see Canon and Nikon merge. Then we could stop all the
"Which is better..." arguments.

Plus I like Canokon.

Wouldn't that be Nikanon? Sounds like a 12-step program ... : )

Would love to see some photos from that lens.
I clicked on the lens in your profile, but there were no photo taken with it.
Did I miss something?

These two were.

I want to take it out to do some night shooting under the next full moon, so hopefully I'll have more....soon.
