Thanks to everyone for voting and commenting on my Pet Portrait II entry.
A special thanks to those who were open to the possibility of having an invertebrate as a pet. For anyone who is interested; the story of Poly X and his unfortunate brother Papi can be found in my portfolio folder for the recent 30 Day Pet Portrait Thread.
Technically, Poly X was not really a pet at the time of the photo; as I had just set him free to live out the last few days of his life in my garden. It was a coincidence that he chose to emerge on the very day that the challenge started. Had I been aware of the challenge, I would have gone to more trouble to get a decent shot.
That being said...be on the lookout for my photogenic cats if ever there is a Pet Portrait III;) |

That's simply an outdoor pet. Many people's cats & dogs live outside in the yard.

Being one of the people who played in the 30 days of Pet portraits I knew immediatley what this was a picture of - but I also knew it was gonna get hit hard for DNMC. In the end I was happy to see Poly X in his final form and there was no better place for you to show her off in full glory.

It's so awesome that Rox entered another challenge ... and had some controversy to boot.
People are really attached to posessions - hence the term "pet" has come to be one of "ownership" for many Americans at least ... in which case people must think "You can't possibly own a butterfly! without even thinking that a place like mmm ... Florida for example, might be a great place to have a pet insect like this - I think a few people were thinking "How dare you push the envelope and fold it 4-times into an origami insect!!!! -- I'm gonna burn your envelope ...and hey ... is that a fake stamp? ".
What a great image! - keep it up.

Too bad someone didn't enter pictures of "Ants"...from their Uncle Ben's Ant Farm.

Thanks guys!
Honestly, I would have struggled with this one if I were voting. It truly is a sort of inside story.
However, I try to make a practice of giving images the benefit of the doubt when it comes to meeting the challenge; unless something is just way beyond my comprehension (which does occasionally happen).
I do hope that this thread might inspire some voters to reconsider before waving the DNMC flag. |

I think a lot of us try to give images the benefit of the doubt. I try. However, I also think that part of the "challenge" at DPC is to convey the idea of that particular challenge in such a way that most people, looking at the image without other considerations, will see or think of the challenge topic.
For most people, a picture of a butterfly will not automatically trigger the "pet" idea.
That's one reason why beautiful images (by themselves) often don't so well in challenges where they are not a real good (or, maybe, "in-your-face") fit.
BTW, [disclaimer to follow] I didn't vote in that challenge :) |

Dogs, cats, snails, crabs, butterflies. No problem.
Horses? Gave the benefit of the doubt. I suppose they are a pet.
Only one I couldn't buy was the elephant heheh. |

This just goes to show how different we are here. "Butterflies, no problem", but then you have to give the benefit of the doubt on a horse. Personally I can see a horse being a pet a thousand times over a butterfly. Don't get me wrong, I've had exotics - a few snakes and a tarantula once (why the hell would anyone have a a tarantula as a pet?), but I definitely see a horse easily being a pet over a butterfly - especially one that isn't in a jar.
I didn't vote in this challenge but I can definitely see how people would give an insect a DNMC. It's hard for some of us to associate a pet as being something we don't "pet".

Really the only reason I gave two seconds of thought to the horse thing was because of the particular picture I was looking at. Some animal that appears to be roaming the range with mountains behind it doesn't strike me as much of a pet any more than a cow or a herd of buffalo. Just because it's fenced in qualifies it?
Again, it wasn't much of a debate. More of 'hmmm, ok sure why not'. |

Hey, I was really into my Sea Monkeys as a kid. So it probably depends on your emotional attachment to another (non-human) creature that constitutes it as a pet.
Check out Wikipedia for "pet" and "domestication". Wikipedia Pet

I absolutely understand. However, I truly think I would've given a butterfly perched on a branch a DNMC over an unfenced horse. Like I said, it just goes to show how we're all different here. The other thread on this topic suggested that the voters who voted this DNMC should feel stupid for doing so and I just don't think that should be the case here. Heck, the photographer knew it would be DNMC and said so in her comments.
This is simply another one of those "should I shoot a DPC friendly subject for score or should I post something personal and get hammered" shots. To be honest though, I don't think it was that bad of a score.

Well you know how it is. Get with the group-think or get under the bridge. |

That sounds about right. Maybe we can get a redesign?
