I own a 10D and use my center focusing point for auto focus and have to say I have NEVER been impressed with the focus result on my 10D. I am thinking about upgrading to the 30D.
Has anyone had similar experiences with their 10D?
Do most of you rely of auto focus or do you manually focus?
Those that went from the 10D to the 30D were you impressed with the difference? |

| I've done the same thing with my 10D (for years) and now with my 30D. I have to say I've always been very impressed with the 10Ds autofocus abilities with my lens collection. I haven't been dissatisified with the 30D but I think the 10D is sharper sometimes. I only manual focus in very low light conditions or for astrophotography. |

I honestly think my 10D has a defect. Out of the thousands of photos I have taken with autofocus, I have almost never gotten a sharp focused shot.
I use USM in PP to improve on the focus, but it still isn't up to snuff. |

Not me. There were reports of 10Ds with back-focus problems, but I never experienced any problems with mine.

Depends on what I'm doing. I use both.

I skipped the 30D and moved up to a 5D. I'm very impressed with the difference, but that has little to do with autofocus performance. :D

If that experience holds true with different lenses on the front, I'd agree with you. I've found the 10D to be an absolute top performer in every way. |

| been there done that...as far as focus issues on the 10D...I chalked it up to a crappy lens. PLUS, digital generally needs sharpening. I got a 30D this summer and I've only used it once (bad me) so I can't say how different it is. |

There were, for sure, some 10Ds that had focus issues. Mine had an intense dislike for my 50/1.4, to the point where I pretty much didn't use the lens for a time, thinking I would need to send it in. On my 5D body, voila, perfect focus. Go figure.
Other lenses performed well with my 10D body; I'm guessing the body just didn't like very fast lenses. |

| Does the 10D have the adjustable diopter? If so, do you have it set correctly? I was having trouble focusing with my 300D, I messed with the diopter and Voila! magic. Dumb me sometimes.... :( |

jfriesen- It does have the adjustable diopter. I never even thought of that. I just adjusted it a bit and took a couple of test shots and it may have needed some adjustments. So you can see the fous I am getting straight out of the camera. Please check out the link below. This is right out of the camera. Do you all think this is acceptable focus out of the camera? No PP done. I focused with center point focusing where the photo seems to be in focus but I still think the result is not good.

Is that a close crop? You've got some nice lenses in your setup so I would expect things to be a little sharper by default..
Take a shot with automatic focus and then take the same shot with manual focus.
The automatic focus should give you desired results is everything is going smoothly (I would think)
If the manual focus is way off, then it could be the diopter. |

Focus is what I would expect. If you don't apply just a bit of USM as recommended by canon (radius .3, 300% or so strength) then it looks a bit dull due to the AA filter in front of the sensor. |

| the test shot is not cropped at all. If that's how it should look out of the camera, ok. But it sure looks bad to me. I will try a few test shots in af and manual to compare. |
