I have a Mac and a 250 GB external harddrive which has everything backed up on it. I used the program Backup, which comes with Macs, to do it. My computer automatically backs up everything once a week.

My mom has a Dell, and has never back anything up. She is worried about the consequences should her comptuer fail. What is the easiest way to set up a back system for a Dell running Windows XP Professional. Ideally she would like to be able to connect an external hardrived to a USB port and have the computer run a back up once a week. Thanks!

Maxtor external HDs come with software to do just that. Piece of cake to set up/use.

In addition to Bear's suggestion, there are probably dozens of freeware or shareware programs for Windows that will do a basic backup to a hard disk. Search verstiontracker.com or some other site for Windows backup utilities or some such. Should be pretty easy to find some that come highly recommended.
