Anyone out there have a suggestion for a nice P&S camera with minimal shutter lag, 5mp+, easy to use/carry. My dad is christmas shopping for my mom and asked for my help. I really don't think $$ is an issue although i will advise him to keep it in the 300-400$ range.

Any particular models to suggest? I like Canon but I really know nothing about their P&S models. Thanks to anyone who can shoot me some advice.

I think a 2.5" LCD would be nice. Heck, i'd like one on my camera ;(

let me get the thread started by recommending the Fuji Finepix F30 or the F31fd (with face detection).

Note that the camera doesn't have the hyped image stabilizing feature as in other cameras, but it does makes up for it by having a low-noise sensor that takes wonderful low-light photos.

Canon SD 800 IS is a great camera that you should take a look at. Great screen, great pictures, great battery life, and image stabilization. You can play with it at a store to see if it has acceptable shutter lag (as this is subjective).

THanks, I'll look at both of those. I might steer him toward purchasing a model with a little more size to make holding easier. Personally i find the slightly larger models more comfortable to use.

I agree with what you said (bolded quote above)
But it depends on your mom's hand, I guess.

I think are pretty average. ;) I was thinking more of stability/camera shake when i wrote the statement above. Thanks again.

A friend of mine just got the Fuji Finepix A700. From the snaps I've seen and from what she tells me, it seems like a nice camera.

Two votes for Fuji. 2 for Canon. ;)

I think it's more about the particular models, not the brand, lol.
Better not group them by brands - you're gonna start something that you can't control!

Just to stink it up a bit, I hear good things about the Nikon Coolpix P1 too .

I am itching to move away from it, but my wee fuji has taken a couple of fair shots. And it is not super small, but it is reasonable in price.

That model is now up to P4. It has Vibration Reduction. The P3 has Wi-Fi (important to some people).

Nikon is my favorite when it comes to P&S cameras.

The FX series, I think? Yeah, the Mega OIS thingy seems to work great.
But beware of anything above ISO100, I read from everywhere that the sensor is pretty noisy.

Canon S3 IS. bubeltrubel, my girlfriend, has got it some weeks ago, must say I am a bit envious. Image stabilizer, 12x zoom, 6MP, larger sensor than the other Canon P&S cameras

So here's a question? Why would I ever want 10MP on a P&S? I'm looking to replace the old S30 I got for my wife who doesn't like lugging the 5D out. I would think that 10MP on a sensor that tiny is going to have terrible noise problems.

Who's got good recommendations for a 5-6MP P&S?

Any opinions on the Sony DSC-H2? Maybe I should stick with canon so I can swap CF cards around. I dunno.

One vote for the Fuji F30, I'll make a seperate post about it in a minute. Have been working on some comparissons to a D70 the last couple of hours.

Well, I checked out OneCall and they had an open box for $209 plus a $50 mail-in rebate. Can't go wrong with that. Hope it works out. :)

If you are looking for a pocket-form factor point-and-shoot, the canon sd800 is great... 7mp but low noise, built in image stabilization. it uses sd, and not cf, though. the sd700 also has IS, is 6mp, and has a tiny bit more zoom and a tiny bit less at the wide range. the sd700 has low noise, clear pictures, and costs less than the 800 (although both are reasonably priced).

if you go the canon route, i'd bypass the sd900 because (in addition to the absence of image stabilization) at 10MP i am suspect about the noise... i haven't tested it out, but in my opinion something like that is grainy until proven otherwise (gupo).

Having had the S1 and still have the S2 I'll second the S3!

I like my S2IS, but then again I haven't had experience with other makes.

My vote is for the Canon S3 IS. Or you can buy me the S3 and he can have my S2????

Here, here. I second that vote. Both myself and evaan now have the S3. I love it. It's fairly compact, but light. It won't fit in your pocket, but it's got an excellent battery life and great zoom. I do miss the remote though.
