While recommending Opanda IEXIF viewer, I noticed that Opanda has an EXIF editor. Not to open a "can of worms", but what's to keep someone from using a tool such as Opanda's Power EXIF editor to alter the date of an image?
Given software like this, how can we truly verify an image that is submitted?
[Edit: corrected typo and removed link to the editor (no need to propagate this tool)]

| SC doesn't need software to see if a file has been altered, they just use their jedi mind tricks. |

I will tell you what stops most people......honesty! While the programme might have its merits...in situations like this, the only people that would actually use it on challenge entries are the 'cheaters'!!!

They should rename that software dpcheat.
If somebody goes out of their way to cheat over a "virtual" ribbon, then let them win. These are probably post-office employees that get knocked around all day and all they want is the taste of victory. To deny them that success would probably cause them to go postal. Nobody wants that. |

NO - it would make the site lose credibility, along with all the honest members. |

Don't be so sure that just because the data fields are modified and saved that's sufficient. There are ways to determine if EXIF has been tampered with.

i've always wondered...for what purpose would you need to edit the EXIF data other than to cheat at something? i mean, why is there even software such as this?

For example, you can add copyright notices to all your images, if you want. Maybe add your contact information, too. The full version of Opanda allows batch editing of such attributes. Heck, you can make up your own attributes and use them for whatever purposes you want--which could be useful in tracking down illegal copies of your copyrighted work. Unless, of course, the thief uses Opanda. :-( |

As General stated, lets not dwell too deep into the whole EXIF editing thing as it is a two-headed sword. |

Maybe to hide the fact that all their posts have been taken by their little sister's camera, the Mattel Barbie Photo Designer Digital Camera.

I've removed the specific instructions you've posted as there's no point in tempting people too much.
That said, it is not impossible for us to determine when a photo's EXIF data has been tampered with. In fact, we had such a case less than a week ago.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for EXIF tampering, and the penalty is a permanent ban for even a first offense.
