OK within the next few weeks I will be ordering my MAC Pro. My question this time is about video cards. I know I can upgrade them at anytime really, but I was wondering which one people here think will fit my needs. My MAC will be used almost exclusively for Photography and editing purposes. I will do some internet work and perhaps at some point if I get the urge, a little gaming, but I would stress little. (little as in how often I would do it, not in the quality of the games)
Here are the choices, the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI)or should I go with the ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI) for $224 more. MAC somewhat pushes the Radeon for photography, but I don't know if they are just trying to make a sale. I have no real strong knowledge on video cards. Any advice will be appreciated. :-) |

| Unless you plan on running two 30" monitors side-by-side, just go with the stock Nvidia card and put the savings toward RAM. The stock card is more than capable of handling 2D graphics and Aperture, and you'll probably be able to upgrade to a card well beyond the capacity of the X1900 if you need to in a year or two. The Nvidia will still drive a 30" and and 24" monitor simultaneously, so a single monitor will have plenty of horsepower behind it. |

Nope, no dual 30" displays for me. Just one 23 inch HD monitor. I thank you for your input scalvert. |

Check out this test of Aperture which was run on MacPros with both video cards. In particular... "The speed of the graphics processor (GPU) was not a factor in TEST ONE and TWO and was only a slight factor in TEST THREE..."

Wow, good info. Although it makes me thing 2GB of memory is barely enough... |
