After a very long wait for this lens (VCL-HGD1758) it finally arrived today. I was very excited until I fitted the lens. For starters, the edges are darkened around the entire image. This I get rid of by just adjusting the zoom a bit. But now the fun starts. I choose a subject and zoom in on it (with the conversion lens option in the setup turned OFF) and then I zoom in on the same subject without the lens. Here is the brilliant thing, they are the same size. It does not get in any closer. Did I misunderstand the idea of teleconversion, or am I doing something way wrong here? Before I go on ahead and win the prize for ID10T of the week, PLEASE could someone with this product and same camera as me just give me a few pointers. I really feel like dumb here, but I dont know what I am doing wrong, and NO, I'm not trying to screw the lens on backwards, lol.
Another thing I noticed with my F717 is that if I switch the Conversion lens option in Setup to ON, I cannot zoom anymore. Any ideas why that is?
Thanks in advance!!
Dan.

Are you zooming to full telephoto and comparing the difference with and without? Can you give some examples? Place the camera on a tripod (if you have one) with the camera set to full telephoto (full zoom) pointing at a distant subject. Take one shot with the lens on and one without the lens on. If there isn't a fair difference there's something really weird going on. You should be able to tell the difference straight away. Keep in mind, however, that it's only 1.7x. It will convert from a 190mm to 323mm 35mm equivalent. While significant, you're still not going to bea able to see the astronauts waving at you.

The conversion lens setting on the camera is for the wide-angle lens. Leave this at 'off'.

I've got this lens on order as well and am looking forward to playing with it.

VCL-HDG1758 is designed to work with Sony autofocus, so the conversion option should be off. And indeed, the difference the TC gives you is noticeable but not dramatic. If your camera is on full zoom (both optical and digital) the results may look be very similar.
