Ok, it's finally winter break so I decided to try my hand at the impossible --> Dax-'s bubbles... yeah yeah, I know
but I tried it anyway, and here it is :
(and here are my first two tries :
)
Go easy on me this time, lol |

I like that first one the best. The backgrounds on the other two are a bit too busy, IMO.
ETA: I owe my Abstract Macro shot to Dax. Her work was the inspiration for it. I'm still surprised that she doesn't have a bunch of ribbons. Her work is fantastic.

thanks guys...
yeah, the first two tries were done from the same shoot with a pan full of soapy water and tin foil in the bottom... it came out pretty rough, so I went and looked at Dax's stuff (I was going from memory) and decided to try with less distracting background and focus more (no pun intended) on getting a sharper bubble with smoother background...
so the last try was taken in just a cookie sheet and I cloned all of the top part in with the healing brush
also, I tried getting more of a profile shot of the bubble, since my older friend couldn't even tell the dark purple one was a bubble cuz of the "bird's eye" view looking down at it... |

You did a fine job. I too am a big fan of Dax. Technically, I think your image is dead on... but is missing the dreamy quality/spirit found in all of the dax shots. Perhaps some movement in the solid colors would help - just my 2 cents.

I love the blue to green background of the first one. The last image, the brighter one of the two at the bottom, looks like a bubble somewhere in a big place, looking at mountains in the distance. A wandering bubble. I sort of like that one best. |

Dax is one of the best photographers in my opinion, and certainly one of my favourites, and I think you've done a wonderful job emulating her style. These are really beautiful; the first is particularly well done. I like Ursula's take on the last one as well. |

lol, that's really cool... I see what you're talking about, snowy mountains... maybe I should call that one "The Traveler" instead
and yeah, Dax's dreamy style is awesome, I don't know how she does it, but I'm going to keep trying :) |

Amanda,
I don't know how Dax does what she does. But if you are looking for that dreamy quality, I might suggest this...
1. Take a macro shot (a bit on the busy side)
2. Do the usual sorts of processing,
3. Copy the bg, run Gaussian Blur, and then mask it with the circular gradient so that only your area of interest is sharp and the rest fades out of focus.
Even if it isn't part of her process... it might yield something interesting for you.
Have fun
Oh, here is an example of that process. I think if some textures were woven in it might approach what you are looking for.
And here is an image that I thought would suit her style of processing (though I didn't edit it myself)
