Thanks to kteach for finding a user on stumbleupon that has either stolen my image and turned it into a gif for there page or found it somewhere else and downloaded it from a site. This was my red ribbon image from April.
this is the stolen image made into a gif.
I started to think that if this person made it themselves and used it I don't mind too much really, although it is stolen. My friend had it up on his myspace profile for along time so I couldn't even say they got it from here. And it seems like the person could be from concord, where I am from since they have a photo from somehwere saying "I love Concord." I am leaving out the person's page since I don't want the person bombarded quite yet. If I find my image is on some gif site that is different and am going to try and find out what I can. The image is hosted by imageshack but that is used by so many people, it is hard to say if the individual added it from somewhere else to post around when they wanted to or if they made it and hosted it for free. So I guess my question is would you care if somebody ws just using your photo, altered, but not for any gain or promotional use? Would you just ask them to take it down or link to your original, or try to raise some serious hell?

I personally wouldn't mind if it was my photo (assuming your situation). If they are making it look like it's there photo then yes I would have a problem or if they are using it for commercial gain.

Wow.... I remember this image from the challenge because I thought it was fantastic! I would most likely e-mail them and politely ask them to remove it as *you* are the copyright holder. I would also be interested in knowing where they got the image from. Stealing someone else's images without providing credit to the photographer is totally wrong (IMHO). |

The image isn't said to be taken anywhere specific, as others on her page and most of stumbleupon link to the origianl, but since this is edited it doesn't show where it came from. I am trying to figure out how to email someone on there but, I think I may have to join to do that. It just accompanies a blog about the endless rain the user had been living in. For awhile this photo was getting looked at like 80 times a day, (months after the challenge, so maybe it was already linked on this site and then edited.)

Are you sure it's the same image? Sure it looks similar, but in the "stolen" one, it's raining a lot harder. ;-)
I would burn their village. And if they stole my photo, I would burn it twice. ;P
Seriously, if it was for personal use, it wouldn't bother me at all. And I have yet to see one of these "they stole my image" threads indicate anyone who has profited financially from the use of it. But I do respect the right of folks not wanting their images out all over the net cavorting with who knows what. |

Yeah its mine, I can still see that strange green fog around the right arm, LOl.
Does anyone know or use stumbleupon.com, I can't seem to find away to email them, I'll guess I'll join and see what happens.

If you close your eyes to someone using your image without permission, pretty soon you can stare wide eyed as anyone will be able to use your image anyway they want.
Copyright is one of those rights that you have to protect... or over time, your right of ownership will erode.
At a minimum, you should either tell them to take it down or put up a credit showing you as the copyright holder.
And register your images if you haven't already (at least here in the US).

That is true but with the advent of the internet "protecting" your rights will be a full time job. If Joe found one of his photos being used I can assure you there are countless other instances he hasn't found yet. In my opinion you should just focus on protecting the commercial use of your images where the internet is concerned.

Sweet! oh wait, not so much...
I am guessing this person didn't make this so yanko's right. I sent an email to the user to get rid of the photo or link to the one here, and tell me where I can find where they got it, or I'll contact stumbleupon.com to have it removed. But I know if this person didn't make it, it is most likely a lost cause to to get it "off" the internet.

The image that was stolen is hosted on imageshack
//reg.imageshack.us/content.php?page=email&q=abuse
is the address to ask to have your image removed from that person's site..

I like how they've made it rain ;)
They should have asked permission though, really. But, yeah, I wouldn't care so much about a small version of the photo being used personally. |

Little Update: the stumbleupon user was happy to take it down, and use mine and was very apologetic, but couldn't remember where she had found the image. Which as yanko said, means there are more around. I am going to get the one from imageshack removed and then see what else I can find. But for now I am off to shoot with cutlassdude70 out in San Francisco!

Just as a quick aside I tried using google images on the title:
//images.google.com/images?q=Fresh%20New%20Rain
I'm curious how many other photo titles here could be Googled in a similar way.
*edit - spelling*

Well, I guess the silver lining is that your photos are good enough to get circulated. That is pretty neat into itself. Too bad otherwise. |

Using quotation marks, e.g. "A Fresh New Rain" will give you more specific results... All the images here are from dpchallenge and dpcprints..
If the burglary took place recently, googlebot takes about a week to update any given site if it is on the search list, so we won't get the results right away.
Plus, the the burgler use a differnet name? OR even mentioned the correct name at all? It would be better to use the filename from the stubleupon website... but again, it will take some time to register with googlebot and other search engines...
