I think your safest bet is to switch the mode dial to 'SP' and select portrait mode, or switch the dial to 'P' if you want a little more control (in this mode the other dial will let you select alternative aperture/shutter combinations).

I found the camera extremely daunting at first and stuck to these mostly automatic modes for several weeks after getting it.

Good luck!

If it's low light you may want to up the ISO to 400 or even 800, test it out to see how fast of a shutter speed you can get, and if the light is not enough to prevent blur, up the ISO. nothing worse than getting blurred pictures. also you may want preview mode on so you can see whether you got the shot or you may want post preview to facilitate speed. simply take a few test shots so you can adjust. I hope the lighting is good.

Bod- I found the interface quite intuitive . . I simply skimmed the manual to find anything I missed. I was using A M & S modes right out of the box. The shift function is quite handy.

B&W mode is within SP mode turn the program dial to SP then the control knob to the right until B&W is selected.

you may also want to make use of the little magnification option(it has the magnifying glass on it) to insure sharp focus

oh and another thing..:) if and when you use AE-L the exposure will appear to change on screen but the actual picture will be at the exposure you locked.

Yup, nothing wrong with the interface, but this is my first non-point-n-clicky camera so I had a *lot* of learning to do!

The shift functions are fantastic - it is well worth learning them quickly so you can change ISO, metering mode and even white balance on the fly.

Be sure to post some examples of your work after you're done.

size your pictures to a presentable size (dpc submission size works) and then upload them to your new account!

Did you use flash on #247. If so, not bad. I haven't really used the flash much on mine.
