I've been playing/practising with artificial lighting a few times and I've not yet been happy with the result. I have a couple of 500W halogens and some other smaller lamps but I don't think the problem is the equipment...I think it's me not really knowing what I'm doing with them!

What I'd like is a few pointers or links to a tutorial/site that has "lighting 101" where I can start with the basics and go from there. Exercises would be a great bonus.

My latest experiments were with Christmas tree decorations. Here's a couple of the "better" shots so you can see where I got to.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Something like this?

Yes, something more like that. I was trying to bring out the colour and detail in the ornament while using the tree branch as a secondary element. The shots I posted hadn't been croped or processed.

The one I posted is just a branch I took off our flocked tree and held about a foot away from a white background. It's lit with a single strobe with a medium sized softbox from slightly above so that light shines on the background and the subject.

Using what you have I would have one light on the background and one on the ornament with a reflector opposite the bulb. If you have something to diffuse the light hitting the ornament that would soften the highlight and make it more pleasing.
