I have established a new personal record: the lowest percentage in a challenge. I just did not get that dirt means mainly
" Soil, on the ground (this sense is principally North American)
Waste material, an unwanted or undesired mixture of dust, soil, and other solids, such as on floors or carpets"
and I associated dirt with dirty, waste.
Hmmm lesson learnt: check a dictionary if English is not mother tongue.
Happy shoting.

Actually the people who voted you DNMC on that shot are in the wrong, because it is them using their own, limited, definition of dirt. |

I think if you look at the winning shots in the challenge, you will see that most people interpreted Dirt as in the UK English "dirty" not the American "soil". Strangely in UK English "soiled" means dirty and not soil in the ground.
However many of the shots that did well did show "soil" not dirt like the one of the plant in the test-tube. So most voters were not biased one way or the other although some clearly were.
So you should be warned NOT to simply go to the dictionary as you might be using the wrong English one. It is often best to look at the discussion on the upcoming challenge in the forums as they will debate these things there.
I think in your case, your shot did not do well not because it did not meet the challenge as it did, but because it was not a particularly attractive image. |

Judging by the comments he received I'd say it was both.

Thank you guys. My idea is also that I would have definetely shot somtething else. Besides Hong Kong is a really clean place and it was (I mean it) hard to find a dirty place (the way i understood the challenge)in the area I live.

I showed some of the dirt challenge to an Italian colleague who said that he would have taken a picture with an environmental theme. I'd like to think that the powers that select challenge subjects try to avoid division by common language as well as anything that would be particularly difficult for EFL members.
