Tokina have just released their lovely new 10-17mm fisheye...
I own the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye...
To trade? or not to trade? That is the question! |

I get more use by far from my 12-24mm than I do the 10.5mm Fisheye. I like having the fish around and I do have some use for it but I rarely/never take it out.
Having said that, I wouldn't trade it. My advice...keep it and save up for the Tokina but if cash is an issue, it might be a good trade based on usage, if you shoot like me.
The only certain advice I can give you is to NEVER listen to doctornick.

Ooops! Sorry, didn't realize that the 10-17mm was also a Fisheye, I thought the it was a Super Wide Angle.
Yeah...keep the Nikkor. |

Any reasons for this guys?
Has anyone used the 10-17?
I'm mainly interested in it because I barely use the 10.5 as it's so restrictive... however, I think I'd use the 10-17 a lot more. |

keep the nikkor. isnt the 10-17 a fisheye at all lengths? What would be the point of using a 17mm fisheye over a 10mm one? If im shooting fisheye, i want something visibly 'fishy' and I want it sharp. The 10.5 fish does that. the 10-17 would appear to be a wide angle shot with barrel distortion in it. IMHO of course.

Sorry to resurect this thread again... but I'm still undecided. I will probably go in to test this lens tonight. However, I've not heard anyone praise this type of lens yet...
I love barrel distortion, reguardless of whether it be 10mm or 17mm. I understand that the only true 180-ish degree fisheye will be at 10mm on this lens, but I'd love to have no correction for barrel distortion at other focal lengths as well.
Obviously the Nikkor is one sharp piece of glass, but will the Tokina really be that bad?

I just got the Tokina 10-17 fisheye as a christmas present. Here is a quick snap I just took, slightly (curves) edited.
Here is a 100% crop of a side:

It works not underwater also. ;) If I wasn't so sick, I would go out shooting, but can only make it to my front door right now. Color and contrast seem good, sharpness about what I would expect. I wouldn't use it to replace a 10-22 as the distortion ruins the quality of the edges. I also expected more of a fisheye effect, but since I haven't really tested it, can't say what it will do. Altogether I'm pleased with my new toy. :)
