There's been plenty posts regarding lenses and what to get because of the holiday season. I've found that SLRGear.com is pretty good about providing some objective data on lenses. They are still populating their database with all the gear that's out there. It's a good place to get some unbias information such as sharpness versus F-stop for the more popular lenses. They have quite a few in the database already. This site is run by the same people that run imaging-resource.com.

I'll second //www.slrgear.com/reviews/index.php because they show you the blur factor over the whole sensor, and often do it for full frame as well as copped sensors.

This site seems to show Canon cares about corner sharpness while some of the third party lens makers seem not to care about the part of the lens that doesn't fall on the crop sensor.

So IMO there needs to be two reviews of each lens that fits on a FF sensor, one for the FF use and one for the cropped sensor use. Many other sites gloss over this difference.

Do you have to register to actually see the reviews on that site? Without logging in there doesn't seem to be any links to the user reviews just how many and the average rating. Or am I missing something?

Click on the "view all tested lenses" link on the right side of the screen...

The link I gave should come up with a list of manufacturers if you scroll down the page a bit.

Its interesting to compare two lenses, like the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and the Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di SP AF. Just open the pages in two different tabs, and select the FF or cropped blur index you want to see (don't forget to set the Tamron to f/4 to keep things equal.)

Note: just compared the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM APO to the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (because the other Canon 70-200s weren't tested). I'll have to take back what I said about corner sharpness and third party manufacturers.

Ya, then you get something like this: //www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/253/si/tested
when you click on the reviews link of a lens.

Where are the user reviews?

But I've found user reviews to be subjective--that is, each person has a different basis for rating a lens. And the "critical-ness" of users is grouped-- L lenses seem to be rated more critically than consumer lenses. This may be because more pro's and serious amatures buy L glass and are more demanding. Those who buy consumer glass may be stepping up from a P&S, and it may look good to them.

That's a different site. The user reviews I was asking about are for the site you linked to. I guess they're not readable but individual users.

OK, try this lens //www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/150/cat/10
and scroll down.

For the lens you mentioned, //www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/253/si/tested, just scroll down to below the advertisements.

there's a forum at //forums.slrgear.com/ that discusses gear.

Thanks. I guess I was expecting some sort of link in the summary box to lead to the reviews.
