This is a Canon specific tip for those with a batter grip (i.e. Me). I just put the door in this slot but appears it can hold a memory card instead - if you are prone to forgetting your card, might be a good plan to stash an older card in here.

| Too bad it won't fit in the XT/XTI grip. I had to check. |

If you do that then you have to find a place to store the battery door, which you may end up losing as a result. He suggests storing it in your camera bag, which is where he originally was keeping extra cards to begin with. Am I missing something here? What's the purpose of the swap?

He's assuming you won't need the battery door because you're using the grip and that it will be obvious if the grip is missing which would require the battery door. The card on the other hand, being not obvious, is easy to leave without so the decision to replace it with a backup card in place of the battery door makes more sense and allows you to use the camera. Personally I'd be more concerned about losing the battery door but I can see where he would have the other concern.

i suppose the benefit could be this. i am at a wedding. i collect the gear i need to shoot at the ceremony, and lock my extra gear in my car a 1/4 mile away. i swap a CF card for the door, and leave the door in the car. when i run out of space on the card i have one handy right on the camera - no trekking back to the car and missing the shots.
although an alternative - and what i actually do is put the CF cards in my pocket - or in a coin holder tied to my neck. filled cards in their cases - empty cards no cases...

Buy a Tamrac strap. It has a place to hold spare cardscamera straps
Plus they are way more comfortable around your neck than the Canon original ones that rub your neck raw.

Worst case scenario on your situation: you drive 300 miles to a trailhead, take your camera out of the bag, mount it on the tripod with the wide angle lens, stick a zoom lens in your pocket, and hike half an hour to a scenic overlook to capture the sunset. OOPS! The card's IN THE BAG! Fortunately you have a fallback card hidden in your grip. I hike into areas where I want to shoot all the time, and often leave the bag in the car if I know what lens/es I will be using. I've never done it without a card yet (I have my own system for that) but this sounds like a cool fail-safe if you use a BG (I don't).

| Wow, I never even realized that space was there, for whatever purpose. Neat. |

I get it now. But isn't that why they have multi-pocket shorts, shirts and jackets for? Although then you run the risk of leaving your cards in the washing machine...

I'd say it's the reason you develop a routine. For example always pick up the camera, check the card, check the batteries, turn it on, check to see if images are there, format card, set ISO, ...., shoot. |
