Hi Everyone,
Once you download new fonts, how can you start using them in Photoshop ? I downloaded and extracted, but, I don't see them in Photoshop. Sorry for the dumb question, but, got to start somewhere !
thanks in advance,

| You have to install them and (probably) restart your computer. How you do that depends on what operating system you are using -- check in the OS Help file under "Fonts" and you should find instructions. |

You need to save the downloaded font wherever other fonts are on your computer - Windows - System - Fonts probably. Make sure you shut down photoshop then reopen it if you have it open when you install the fonts. .

Ok...question.
I have a Fonts folder and an Extrafonts folder. I keep all new fonts in the Extrafonts folder so when I am working in PSP it doesn't take so long to load. When I need to use one of those fonts I simply go to my Extrafonts folder and double click on the font I want and minimize the window. By keeping it open it will still show up in my PSP fonts list. This saves having to bog down my Fonts folder by installing them all.
Now, with this in mind...does someone know if there is a way that fonts can be used in PS WITHOUT having to install them all into the actual Fonts folder....this is such a pain in the butt...and when you have over 1000 extrafonts....it really drags the system down.

I haven't had to use them for a while, but there are "font managers" out there that load and unload fonts on the fly without the need for a reboot. I don't know how they relate to the XP operating system, but back when I was doing graphic design they were indispensable. You could create sets of fonts and make them document-specific, for instance.
Try googling "font managers and see what you find. I used to have over 2000 fonts on my machine in San Diego.

If you have windows it is so easy to install fonts. Just unzip the folder, copy the file and paste it into C:\WINDOWS\Fonts

And be sure to restart Photoshop after doing that. |

| In order to use them without installing them on your hard drive is to unzip or winrar the downloaded file. Doubleclick the TTF icon that shows you what they look like. Leave this open and now when you open Microsoft Word or Photoshop, this font will show as available in the drop-down list. It can be used as long as this file stays open. Close it when you are through with the font and it will no longer be available. But it also won't crowd up your hard drive. |

Yup...that is what I have done for years with PSP...but for some reason it wouldn't work with PS. I will try again.

| I think that I remember that you first open the font file, THEN you open Photoshop. |

Anyone with a lot of fonts should consider a font management program. Extensis Suitcase is a great program for a reasonable cost (it's really discounted if you're a student - go to academicsuperstore.com). It lets you organize fonts, preview and compare them, and create sets to turn on and off for projects. You can look at it online:
//www.extensis.com/en/products/font_management/index.jsp;jsessionid=KODJM4PFCA2KLLAQAAUQ0FQ
Adobe makes a program too, but it doesn't have all of the features of the Extensis software. Hope it helps. |
