High winds blew my neighbor's tree down onto the power line to my office at about 5am this morning. Fortunately I was in the house this time (yes, it happened once before). This time it ripped the whole outer wall open right outside my window.

Luckily the power was still on because I have a chain saw, but it's electric (brilliant, huh?). I spent an hour or so this morning cutting the tree up knowing I would end up on one of those Darwin awards list. But I survived. Power company finally came out but all he did was disconnect the strain releif cable that was pulling the wall. No contractors available to fix it and if it rains, I have a giant funnel right into my computer desk. So a trip to the hardware store, a little ingenuity and 5 hours of precarious labor and I got it temporarily patched up.

Anyway, grrrrrrrr. Like I needed this. >:/

What would you expect them to do? Their job is to deal with power lines and related issues, not fix gaping holes in houses. If the tree were still on the wire, they'd have taken care of that I think, but other than that...?

Art, my condolences. We spent some time clearing out some dying pines this summer for that very reason.

Hmmm...maybe that's the difference between the countries...over here they would help out.

Man, that really bites. I'm glad you're alright.

BTW, I'm getting really creeped out right now, you'll know why soon but I can't say yet. Thankfully (I guess), all of our trees(in Buffalo, NY) blew down last month.

Bummer! Hope you are all safe and sound (and that your patches keep out the rain). If all else fails, Godzilla will help dry things out. ;-p

Not here. There are "liability issues" to contend with, see? (big sigh) Plus, how would you go back to your boss and explain that the Smiths and The Browns didn't get any help from you today because you spent the whole afternoon helping the Roflmaos fix their ruptured house? jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

You are exactly right, bear - they would have removed the tree, but they wouldn't fix the building. When I said "all he did was disconnect the strain relief cable" - I was very glad he didn't say he was going to have to shut down my power until I get the wall fixed. He didn't even turn it off to remove the strain relief.

Thanks for the concern - Riley, Brian and my wife were in the house - the office is actually a 720sqft finished apartment over the garage, separate from the house. There's actually 2 offices, a conference room, kitchen and bathroom. I could not live or work without this space being far enough away from the house to have some peace. :)

Problem is finding a contractor that works on these buildings. It doesn't look that hard to fix for someone with the right tools & materials, but it's difficult and dangerous to access.

Glad everyone is Ok.
Maybe time to call in a favor from your abused well-used buddy Godzilla.
A shoulder ride and a tool belt and you'll be good as new in no time flat Ken.

Hmmm, it is metal siding. Maybe a quick breath or two from G would weld the siding back together.

Thanks Brad. :)

Looks as if Godzilla came, Godzilla chewed, Godzilla left...

Seriously, glad to hear it's only property damage and that you and your family are okay.

Set me up with a plane ticket and I'll be right out to help you fix that up, Art! I'll even bring a roll of duct tape.

Keep your pecker up.

well... sorry to hear about the damage, but glad to see it's only a flesh wound and didn't take out the roof...

though, if you're going to have that much wind, perhaps you should take down a few more of the tress... preemptive strike...

or just eat less chilly...

Serious Bummer!

If you lived in Florida I'd fix that for you at cost...(the building, not the desk;). Glad nobody got hurt.
