Just looking for some opinions on whether this is a good tripod:
Bogen 725B
Any other suggestions for same price-range (around $100)?

I recently asked this same question and I think I even linked to the same tripod you did. Here is what I found. It seems to be worth spending a little more and getting the Bogen 3021BPRO. It seems to be the one everyone has and suggests. I will be ordering one with the 804RC2 3-way head soon. B&H has it for $220 with free shipping and a $25 rebate.

You can't go past the 3021 for it's price. The 488-RC2 head is a great head for it as well. |

I have the 724, and it's a good travel tripod, or for light cameras in ideal conditions. The 3021 will be better, it has variable leg angles, a lot sturdier, goes to ground level, etc. The head on the 724 isn't that great either, the 488 would be better.
Still, for the price it's not bad. You can get a bigger one for telephoto stuff or wind, and keep it for travel. |

Get the 488RC4 head if you ever plan on having big heavy lenses.

If I'm not mistaken, this is a relatively short tripod, where you have to lift the center column to get the lens at eye level. This is a very bad thing. Light weight + extended column = extreme susceptibility to vibration and wind. The 3021 with legs at full extension is at eye level for me, and in fact this is the main reason I traded in my very nice Slik (pretty comparable to the 725 Bogen) for the 3021.
The 725 is a nice tripod, but not a great one. It will probably work fine with shorter/lighter lenses, but you won't be happy with it if you start mounting lenses like the Canon 70-200mm f/4L and larger. Also, the head it's delivered with is a joke IMO. Little, weak ballheads like that are a pain in the keister to fine-tune framing with, ESPECIALLY witht he camera tilted to vertical framing, where the whole thing is ridiculously off-balance to one side. This isn't a problem with point 'n shoot type cameras, but it sure as heck is with dSLR gear.
Robt.

I'm looking for something a little cheaper than the 3021. Would this combination be good for supporting D50 and 70-300 lens?

Bump cause I'm interested in this tripod too. I would LOVE the 3021, but I don't have the extra $100 to spend on that. What I mainly want is a sturdy tripod that will hold my camera, flash, and lens all without falling over (unlike my old walmart one...), luckily I caught it when it fell. Anyway, the other thing I'm looking for is the reversible center column so I can get the camera very low to the ground without having to hold it with my hands. If this tripod does all of that, then I'll probably get it.

Actually that's kinda cool that the center column doubles as a monopod.
