It's certainly cheaper and it has many of the same features as the D200. I've looked at some side by side comparisons, but I don't think they are comprehensive.
What does the D200 have that makes it worth so much more than the D80? I've seen that the burst frames per second is higher in the D200 (5 fps vs. 3 fps), but what else? I think the D200 has mirror lock up, but I haven't seen whether the D80 does or not (I suspect not). Anyone know? |
The biggest thing from my POV was the metering (1005 pixels for the D200 vs. 420 for the D80). I tried both cameras in the store and when I tried to take a picture of a light-colored print with some glare the D80 couldn't figure it out, while the D200 merrily clicked away no matter what. I take enough pictures in similar situations to think the D200 will work better for me. And Santa said OK :-))) |

Where did you get this info? I'd be curious what my D70 has in comparison. I find that I do a lot of manual metering anyway, so I'm not sure this would matter to me, but I'm still curious to see how it compares to the D70.
Edit to add that I like your Santa -- can he visit my house? :)

I got it off the Nikon site ;-) Which I just closed so I'd have to go look up the specific link, but it was on the Nikonusa site (drill down to the D200 or any of the DSLRs and there should be a comparison link on the upper right ... not too far above the $100 off link in the D200's case).
No, you may not have my Santa. I had to put up with him when he was considerably less generous so I get to enjoy this all by myself!!
(edit to fix typo ... darn fingers got ahead of me)

LOL, fair enough. My Santa may get upset if I switched teams like that anyway, and I think she'll be just as good to me! |

The number of pixels is irrelevant as I understand it. It has more to do with the way the metering was implemented in the camera. (D70 was 420 and did not have this issue) but if you use center or spot metering this wont be an issue. But all in all it is a very good camera but I am a Nikon guy and would never bag on any Nikon.
Good luck! |

"Most of the changes are improvements, even where they don't at first appear to be. The D80's 420-pixel metering system is revised from the one in the D70 series, faster to calculate and has more pattern matching. The 1/200 flash sync speed seems like a step backward, but the D80 doesn't have the D70's electronic shutter (which can cause blooming), instead adding TTL FP sync at any shutter speed with the current Nikon Speedlights."

In Europe they have a coupon action at the moment. When you buy a D200 you get a set of coupons worth 1200 euro (app 1400 dollar) in discounts on other Nikon gear. Like 200 euro off a 70-200 VR, flashes, other lenses, Capture NX.
I'd rather have a normal discount. I already got all the friggin gear, those coupons are worthless. :( It would have been great when I first started, could easily have used for about 600 euro worth of discounts.
Just hope my D70 falls into the snow or freezes to death when I go to Finland next month. Good excuse to replace it. :) Hmmm, 2 hour long exposure at -25 celcius..... Good idea.

Seems like a lot of us got one a few weeks ago. We should have gotten together to see if we could have gotten a "group purchase" discount.
Oh well, honestly I could have paid $2000 for my camera and still be happy. I love it. |

Yeah, me too. I got it for $1,499.- in mid November, so the price drop isn't that terribly much. Although an extra $150.- would go a little ways towards some of the lense I'd like to get :)

I did a research between D80 and D200 before. This is probably useful to those who are torn between the two.
Ken Rockwell's Comparison of D80 and D200
I have tiny hands -- when I tried the D80 and D200, I find the latter too heavy for my grip. It helped me make my decision even if I like the D200 features more. :) |

OK - I could not stand it. I know it's to close to Christmas for spending money on myself! I checked out muckpond's search and there it was, on the second or third page of specials, $1299! Another $50 off! I called B&H and the guy was surprised and did not know about it.
I went ahead and placed my order online before they change that listing. Now if I can just keep the wife from seeing the big brown truck pull up ......
