ok, so I took some christmas portraits yesterday of my kids, and I can't for the life of me, figure out how to get rid of the bright window light behind their heads. It's very distracting and blown out. I'm sending these pictures to my family, and it's just driving me nuts cuz I hate the bright light. Any suggestions? here is ONE picture below that i can't adjust the bright light.. a lot of them have it.

Can't you just re-shoot? -a whole lot less work. |

Probably the only way to really fix this one. |

it wasn't easy with my youngest son to get these photos, and this week is soooooo busy ,and far to close to christmas to send these all out to my family in time. My youngest son was a pain in the rear to get these shots, he's very hyper and its hard to get him to settle down. I know my family won't mind the blown out light, but I do. There has to be someway to edit that out?????? |

You've got not only overexposure but also odd color cast. I tried this quick fix:
I duped the original layer and removed color.
Then duped the B&W layer, set it to darken and ran a High Pass filter on it...then faded the layer to my liking.
Still a lot of work if you've got several. |

I wonder if there is someway to do some selective desat so that there still is some color? I'm still learning the advanced editting... |

can you post the original file? its looks as though a certain degree of post-processsing has been applied here so would be beneficial to see how it looked when it came out of the camera. |

i dont want to have to cut down the picture so much.. I'm editting right now, still trying, and honestly I'm thinking of giving up and just dealing with it... and maybe reshooting just after christmas for my own collection. My family isn't going to mind the blown out portions. IF you all end up figuring out something, I'll keep checking back... thanks!

Here's another try.
I used levels to set the black point to one of the background shades.
Duped the original layer and turned it B&W...the faded opacity to around 60%.
I like Spazmo's crop. With this image there doesn't seem to be enough info in the lights to rescue it completely from being washed out. |

You didn't happen to shoot this in RAW format, did you?

my camera is too cheap for raw format... Its a Kodak Easyshare c340. It doesn't have a lot of modes in it, I shot this in Backlight mode on my camera cuz there wasn't any other light than the window. And other modes that I tried in made the picture too dark. And now it's too bright... well the window light is... i'm frustrated.. |

I really like KaDi's b&w version of it. Looks great to me. :) |
