I open a photo.
I create a curves adjustment layer and adjust the curves.
With the curves layer visible, I select a color from the picture, then choose paintbrush.

What comes out under the paintbrush isn't the same as what's selected. I verified that by comparing the selected color with what's painted.

Does anyone know what's happening here?

Here's a specific example.

Create a new doc with this background color: 213, 233, 204
Create a curves adjustment layer with a single point on the master graph at 175, 112
With the curve on, use the eyedropper and the color comes out as 174, 157, 214

The same thing happens when I use a levels adjument layer instead of curves.

Okay so far. The new color's darker than the old.

But now, when I use the paintbrush, what comes out is 111, 88, 176 - verified using the eyedropper again, both hovering over the painted area and looking in the info pane and actually clicking the eydropped and confirming the selected color.

And if I start painting with that color, what comes out is 45, 30, 113!

do you have the layer set to normal? if it's in color mode ro something else that can happen.

Thanks. Yep. Everything's blending in normal mode: paintbrush and curves layer. And everything's 100% opacity.

Shoulda mentioned those up front.

Is your colour space set to sRGB? I dunno if they make any difference but its worth trying out...

Turn off Curves (and all other adjustment layers) when cloning or painting, or else the new material can have the effect (already) applied to them. Once you are done cloning/painting, you can turn the adjustment layer(s) back on, and everything should still match.

Also, it's best to clone or paint onto a new layer, so that you can toggle the change on-and-off to check, and you leave the original data intact underneath (non-destructive editing).

Thanks. That's the workaround I've used, but it's annoying. Is this really how it's supposed to work? It'd be much nicer to be able to edit with the modified look instead of having to remember what it'll look like.

And I agree 100% with non-destructive editing. I wind up with many layers I delete later. :)

No one out there has either encountered this or fixed it? Hmm ...

Yes, it's working exactly as it should.

Think about it this way. You apply a color to a layer and then use an adjustment layer to change the color. Then you sample that combination and try painting again on the underlying color layer. The adjustment layer is of course still going to do its adjustment, in this case make the color darker, because it adjusts everything below it. If you wanted to paint with the same color you should turn the adjustment layer's visibility off and sample the original color not the combined color of the original plus the adjustment layer. Then you can turn back on the adjustment layer and paint away with the color you intended.

Ah, riiiight.

Now I get it.

Thanks!
