So I shot the Steelers game last night, and I brought my laptop along so I could upload shots to the newspaper from the stadium (I normally upload everything from home, so I don't take the laptop often).
I'm not fond of leaving the laptop in the photography room, so I have one of these cheesy Kensington combination locks that I put on it. It connects to a little notch on the side of the laptop, and then you can attach the wire to the table.
Well, when it was time to leave, I couldn't for the life of me get the lock to detach from the laptop. After trying several magical spells and numerous bad words, I got the help of a police officer to locate a tool to snip it free.
Now I have this stub with a combination lock still sticking out of the side of the laptop, and even with the correct combination (which I've been using all along), it won't come free.
Sooo... I'm just wondering if there are any shady characters out there that might know the best way to saw this stupid thing off of here?
I find it rather ironic that with a very simple pair of pliers I could snap the computer free (I even used a heavy-duty pair of scissors to further trim the wire this morning), so anyone could easily steal the laptop with this thing anyway...
Any help would be appreciated. I'm going to go the hardware store and see if there's a tiny hand-held saw I can try on it.

Good news is there is a 1 year warranty on the lock so you could return it for exchange once it's completely demolished. :)
I gotta say I've seen locks that seem stronger than this little puppy. |

Bad news is I've had it well over a year :)
Yeah, I wasn't looking for something rock solid... I was looking for something that communicated the message, "I'd prefer that you not steal my laptop, mister criminal. Please take one that isn't chained to anything."

Alan, go to Youtube.com and search on lockpicking - unfortunately there are many videos out there showing you how to easily pick that lock - it is very simple. Our local sheriff sent our community some warnings about these locks with this info. |

I checked out the YouTube stuff, but those tricks seemed to be for a different variety of lock than what I have. I did solve the problem, though. If anyone runs into the same issue, a tiny hacksaw works nicely :) |

laptops are famous for being easy to steal, I have seen them sotlen from computer stores under a security cable with a 100db alarm, point is laptops are small and easy to walk off with. is why I don't like lappys to much
