I need internet/dns help desperately. I tried webhostingtalk forum but no answers. So I turn to this wonderful and diverse community. Surely there are some dns/tcpip experts on board?
I have a virtual hosted server which I can no longer reach. I thought it was down, but now it seems like I am the only one who cannot access it.
the site is peparchive.org. (If you go to it with http successfully, you will simply be rerouted to pep-web.org. Thats because the web pages I use from that site are not meant to be used from the root.
When I tracert to it, I get stopped just before the server. HTTP can't reach it. FTP can't reach it. But others can--even someone in my neighborhood, using the same cable service.
I've tried resetting my local DNS cache (I use treeDNS); I've tried resetting my cable modem, my router. I've tried to get on the site from three computers here--two PCs and a Mac. Nothing.
Here's what happens when I tracert.
[c:\win32app\4nt4]tracert //www.peparchive.org

15 62 ms * * fcr01.dal01.softlayer.com [66.228.119.238]

I can't figure out why this would be happening, other than a router problem somewhere. But then why does it seem to only affect me?

It seems like your IP address is being blocked. Try renewing your ip address using your cable modem interface. If you have a static ip you will need to have your ISP change your address. |

Yes, of course. It doesn't work either (and as you can see, the tracert is using it so my local dns is looking it up correctly)

I did reset my cable modem to try and get a new address and that didn't work. However, I didn't verify that my address actually changed, so I'll try that again.
That sounds like the most logical explanation so far, but I can't imagine why they would block me. I've been using it for more than two years!

I was going to suggest also that your IP or netblock are possibly being blocked by the last hop. Confirm by trying dialup, if you have access to it, or contacting requestdns.com, or whoever is responsible for that server. |

That must be it. Louis, great idea. I just went through a web proxy, and I was able to get there. So now the question is who is blocking me (and why)

Ok, weird, but somehow I fixed it.
I rebooted my modem, but it gave me the same address.
So I tried something that's probably not neetiquette. I set the IP in my router to force it to use my IP address + 1.
Then it worked.
So then, to be a good netizen, I switched back to "getting the IP address" dynamically from the cable company.
[And it still works. Even though my address is back. I don't quite understand that.] NOT! (edit)
I think it must be cached now, since I can't FTP to the site. I need to somehow figure out how to get the dynamic server to assign a new address. Maybe I need to be unplugged for a while?

Well, so far I can't get TW to reset my IP address by resetting the modem.
But if I bump my IP plus 1 in my router, everyhing is fine. But I'm curious: if I keep this set this way for tonight, what can happen? What happens to the internet if two addresses collide?
I guess someone else might have the same address? But I'm not sure why it even works, since I presumed my address would be somehow "forced" by TW.
It's also weird that, if they are blocking that address, bumping the last number of the address by one would be enough to get past it. I would presume they would block a "block" of addresses.
I guess tonight I'll unplug and see if it reassigns me an ID. And tomorrow, if need be, I'll call TW and see if they can reset my number it from "support"
Thanks for your help!
