ok well im reading this tutorial on the shutterspeed and aperture and such and it suggests a sp of 1/1000 but im frusterated, i have my 350 set to manual mode, im using that scroll wheel to set the shutterspeed but the lowest i can seem to make it go is 200 when i scroll all the way to the right, going to the left i get 30" what does that mean btw?
Im going by this chart found on //www.morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php?lesson=2
so for shutterspeed 1/1000 what aperture would i use?

Hi,
I cant really answer your question, as I think you may need to do a bit more reading around! When I got my rebel I found these tutorials at canon really useful!
Good luck dood! |

| your aperture value should not stop you from changing your shutter value since you are in the Manual setting. maybe someone with a 350D can help you. BUMP. |

30" means of cause 30 seconds.
Just a guess, too: If you have enabled or connected a flash (standard sync time for flash for the 350 is 1/200th) you can't expose shorter, otherwise the curtain would cover parts of the image, it is not as fast as the flash itself.

There should be a "B" or bulb setting. Shutter stays open as long as you hold the shutter down. I cable release is highly recommended.

two words...
bulb mode
You'll probably want a remote to do that since you have to hold the shutter for whatever length you want (or get a remote with a timer). |

It is possible, in "bulb" mode. You must either manually hold down the shutter button (not recommended will result in shakey images), or have an external trigger that can be held or locked down. |

Long exposure = Bulb mode. Go in MANUAL MODE and turn the wheel to the left until you see "bulb" in the display.
Aperture: If you have the kit lens your lowest aperture is 3.5... If you can't get it, play with the zoom until you are able to get it. If you are not using the kit lens, it will be marked on the front ring of the lens how wide you can go with it.
Shutter speed: You can get as fast as 1/4000 (if no flash is used)

The number 3.5 refers to an aperture of f/3.5. This is limited by the lens and not the camera. The kit lens is a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. That means that the largest aperture is f/3.5 at 18mm or f/5.6 at 55mm. This is precisely why so many of us own the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens, as it is several f-stops lower than the kit lens.

Go to B&H and get the cheapo IR remote release... in "bulb" mode, press once to open shutter, press again to close shutter. Recommend using a tripod and mirror lock-up feature to prevent shakies.
Remote Control
Sample images with that set-up:

When you say you are in the manual mode what letter or icon is aligned with the small white line to the left of the wheel (between the wheel and the flash)?
In the manual mode ([M]on the dial)the front scroll wheel next to the shutter button will control your shutter speed. Scroll to the left (toward the lens) and you will get a longer shutter speeds and when you scroll to the right (away from the lens) you will get faster shutter speeds. The Canon 350D in the manual mode gives you the following shutter options starting at the far left.
bulb (The bulb mode will keep the shutter open as long as you keep the shutter pressed down. Best to have a remote release and use tripod)

All shutter speeds will be displayed in the view finder and on the top LCD screen.
To adjust the aperture. Use the same scroll wheel while holding down the AV button located on the back of the camera (top right button next to the LCD screen. It will be labled AV/+-). Hold it down until you reach the aperture you desire. The Aperture range will be decided by the lens you are using. Example with my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 the following apertures are available at all shutter speeds.
2.8 - 3.2 - 3.5 - 4.0 - 4.5 - 5.0 - 5.6 - 6.3 - 7.1 - 8.0 - 9.0 - 10 - 11 - 13 - 14 - 16 - 18 - 20 - 22 - 25 - 29 - 32.
