Last nite was the unexpected. My wife and I showed up early so we could get good seats. While standing around waiting for the doors to open, I started inquiring about where I could and could't take photos. The lady told me to wait a minute and she would find out. I waited and waited then all of the sudden a lady appeared and asked me to come with her. She introduced herself as the show promoter stating she was from Nebraska and said she was interested in me taking photos of the event. She said they would buy the photos from me and proceeded to give me her name, address and phone number. I agreed and now have over a 100 RAW files to process and edit. Then at the end of the show the manager of the facility approached me saying they wanted photos for their website also.

Dang! Good deal!!! I guess asking a few questions and trying to be polite really pays off sometimes! :-) That's really awesome and I hope they buy all of your images.

That's great. I am curious though, what color XT do you have? I am going to guess you have the black one. When I decided I was getting an XT then next descision I had to make was what color. I thought black would look like a higher end camera, and that can be a good thing and a bad thing. Good thing in a situation like yours when someone just has to go by what they see to decide if they want to "hire" you, bad thing if you are walking around a bad part of town. Anyways, I ended up with silver.

I was contacted by the same lady again this year. So off to the bullriding I go again in January. Last year I didn't have a flash, this year I do. My question is should I use the "second curtain sync mode" or "high speed sync" flash mode to stop the motion. The manual refers to the second curtain sync mode when shooting moving subjects.

Congrats!

I have mine set to 2nd all the time because I prefer the motion behind the clear portion created by the flash. I don't believe that high speed would freeze motion because you would get a slice for each flash in the high speed portion which would create a blur I suspect (I only have an old flash, so cannot do high speed right now).

"high speed sync" is a way for the flash to sync with the shutter at speeds over 1/200s. It makes the flash pulse quickly at lower power, it won't help you stop motion and may actually be worse than regular flash. I don't know. but all it will really do if your shutter is set at 1/200 or slower, is waste battery power.

2nd curtain sync works well if the ambient light level is high enough to make up a significant portion of your exposure and the shutter spped is low enough to record motion as a blur. What it will do is make any motion blur appear to trail behind the motion and give the appearance of motion occuring the way you would expect.

If the ambient light is low, or there's little motion blur, it doesn't really matterif you pick first or second curtain sync.

...you never posted any shots. :(

So the promoter forgot to hire a photog before the event and figured she'll just snag one of the spectators to do it. I wonder how many ad hoc bull riders there were. ;-)

I didn't mind I was there anyway and now she'll probably call me every year. I made a few bucks off the deal. This year I get in for free and get to sit on the fences so I'm nice and close instead of shooting from the dark balcony.

Well, congrats! It is quite a lucky break! Be sure to post some pics this time! Hope you catch a shot of one of those things flipping over, slamming into the wall and bursting into flames. That'd be so cool! :)
