I feel the same way. I think that's why I hit a slump for a while, and with the way the current challenge is headed, it looks like I haven't made it out of the slump yet! I just wish more people would give good, constructive comments!!! |
I think there are quite a few people here that try to give constructive comments on challenge entries. It isn't always easy, there are so many images to comment on. Also, I think a number of commenters have gotten "burned", where they were trying to be helpful and constructive, but they got yelled at by the photographers.
I have been trying to comment more on challenge entries lately. It's slow. It's scary. But it's actually interesting.
Another thing to remember is that for someone giving comments, they hardly ever hear back what's constructive and helpful and what isn't, so sometimes (at least in my case) I figure that my comments really aren't that helpful. A lot of us do not feel qualified to comment on what would make an image better. |

I'm right there with you. But we have to hang in there buddy. I've only entered two challenges, but I am planning to enter lots more and work on getting my average score up.
I'm getting so much advise from people now that I have to print it all and go study it.
I think patience and practice is key here. |

I find for myself that critiquing other people's shots helps me look at my own. I find that for voting I am pleased when my votes match what the submitter gets in the end.
The problem I am experiencing and it is SO hard to break is that these are photos. When I submit them I feel like I am putting my children on display and God help any one criticizes them. Thats the key I think. Submit and let it go. Don't take it personally. Its funny but if you look at any of the top 20 pics in any challenge I'm sure you can find one that you thought should have won but didn't.
I myself am still bouncing all over. Case in point is my friggin' Death submission (ala 4.1...poop). You try things. People like them. Or don't like them. Really it doesn't matter. So long as you learn from it. I guess thats another thing I've had to learn myself. This site IS very humbling. BUT when you do get something that people like you certainly feel rewarded. (So far my best is 5.85 and I was sooo happy with that).
Anyways...

A quick copy/paste of the challenge history into Excel and some formula magic tells us that the average vote in all challenges to date is 5.2716

Take a look at my first entries. That was 2 years ago. You learn so much. You should seriously consider pushing your personal envelope and not think about stopping for a long while still. Pick out 2-3 photogs you admire here and emulate them to try new things. Really practice in Photoshop, even just for fun to learn little tricks and techniques.
There are 1 million things to learn and try in photography. It is up to you whether to discover them or not. But I for one don't regret making that decision.

You say "I am a mediocre photographer" like that's a bad thing! Some of us are quite proud of our mediocrity. You probably have folks away from this site telling you your stuff is amazing... And away from this site, it is. In fact, on this site, it may well be amazing but just not what the voters wanted that day. I've never broken into the top ten and I've been at this (DPC) for awhile. I may be mediocre by DPC standards, but I think I'm halfway decent compared to the vast majority of folks who take pictures. And I do get a kick out of the challenges - it keeps you shooting. Stick with it - you'll probably get a ribbon in no time! |

my first 7 entries:
4.7362, 5.296, 4.9668, 4.6727, 5.662, 4.3881, 4.7138
I was kicking and screaming
I started to improve ... partly because I knew what worked on DPC after a while but mostly because I found a happy medium between my ideas and my skills. This site is a great way to improve your skills (because peopl eare always more than happy to give you feedback and help you in any category) ... there's absolutely nothing wrong with your images - remember you're competing with pros and people that have been in to this for a while! Just keep shooting.
edited because i always do.

Thank you. |
Thanks. If you don't get critiques during the challenges start a thread afterwards and ask for some. Many people here will be more than willing to provide you that when they know you're open to it. Also, be sure to fill out your photographer comments with some more information about the photo and what you were trying to acheive. That will help others give you better and more direct feedback. |

Thank you again to everyone who was kind enough to comment or send a message. I appreciate the support and feedback you have given me. I have also realized that like most of you have said there are some really awesome photographers here and to be in the middle of them (I was 250th out of 501 on the last challenge) can't be as bad as I thought it was. I do however wish I would have received some more comments (only got 1) on the last entry so I would know how to make the next ones better.
Again, thanks to everyone and happy holidays. |

Benjamin,
Do YOU like your photos? If you do, and even if you never get "better", then enjoy what you create. Did you buy your camera to make other people happy, or to do something you enjoy doing? |

That is a good set of questions. Yes I like my photos and I bought the camera to do something I enjoy. One of my reasons I joined this site was to get good feedback on the quality of my photos. My family will always tell me the photos are great, but I never know if they are just saying that or if they mean it. So joining here and competing was a way to see if they really were good photos or not. |
