well after buying my 400D I have seen very good deals with the 350D and better glass. That might be a reason!!
I would have even considered nikon D80 if the 18-135 lens were around at the time. [Ivan runs to wash his hands after typing that] ;)however, having the telephoto macro is nice.
BTW I forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

As I have heard said before elsewhere - you are beginning a camera system. The 350 is awesome. Now take your time and invest wisely in the right glass for you. Congrats!

| also, this may sound like a silly question, but i remember reading bout dust on the sensor or something, do you guys leave your lens on it all the time when not in use or do you take it off? just curious cuz id imagin more dust would get on the sensor when your taking the lens off and on and stuff. Also, how often should i clean the sensor, and how? Kinda scared to fiddle with it, i know bout notgetting finger prints on it so ill wear some powder free latex gloves and stuff. |

Buy this lens

Most bang for the buck and a nice second lens to have.

The lens that was suggested is a prime lens (just has one focal lenght), and is faster than the one you have (good if you shoot in poor light conditions), very cheap and excellent for portraits. Look at the images taken with it.
Before going for any extra lens, play around with your camera, see if you end up wishing for a wider or longer lens. I mean, when shooting you would like to get closer to the subject or you would like to include more in the frame? answer that question first and then you will know if what you need is a wide angle or a telephoto (w/macro) lens.

Congrats! Now you need to take some photos and enter a challenge. Got any pets?
As for important things you should know, here is what I learned in the first week
- Canon makes a starter kit that comes with a nice bag, battery and UV filter and can be had for as little as $65 shipped. Very good deal. Canon #9612A007
- Full auto can be annoying.
- Make sure you look at all the settings each time before you take photos. The third day I owned it I took almost 100 photos at a Punkin Chunkin contest with the exposure compensation set to +2 in Program Auto. They looked fine on the preview but once I got home, I couldn't save even one photo.
- If you are going to shot an event, shut off Auto Preview and it will double your battery life. You can manually preview the shots as needed.
But most important of all, have fun.
Edit to include reason for buying the 50mm: Buy it cause it rocks. Buy it cause everyone owns one. It is probably the sharpest lens under $500 and it only costs $70.

Even with auto-preview on my 350d battery would last an easy 1500 pictures or more. |

Canon says 500 I think. I got about 950 out of my last charge with auto preview turned off. |

Just dig through the menu and you will find auto preview.
As for ISO info, see this link. All I did to find it was to search Google for "iso digital camera". Try searching for each of your questions there first and you will probably get better answers. Or at least less biased answers :)
