I bought 2 Canon lenses and mailed in everything they asked for. Now they say that I did not send in the UPC codes. I KNOW BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that I mailed in the ORIGINAL UPC codes...I went to the copier, made a copy of the upc codes, placed both originals in the envelope and mailed it right away. (this was done at a local postal junction...no driving involved...straight from the copier to the envelope to the mail box...all within 20 feet of each other.)

There is NO WAY I did not comply. They said BOTH upc codes were not included...LIARS!! I was on hold over 65 minutes last night and 45 minutes this morning. Finally I tried again and someone answered promptly.

OOOOOOO I am mad about this!!

Canon requires the original UPC to be cut from the box & sent to them. Not a copy. It says so on the rebate forms. :(

I sent the ORIGINALS and kept a copy for myself...that is why I am so mad!

Call their rebate department and see if you can speak to someone live. Perhaps its an oversight somehow. I've never had a problem with their rebates. Sorry you're having one.

I did, and the rep said I did not send them in otherwise it would be in their computer. Well, someone over there screwed up and did not give me proper credit.

I have never had problems with Canon Rebates either...until now!

I've seen a trend lately when it comes to rebates. It has happened 3 or 4 times for me.

I send in a rebate form with the required UPC codes (Originals, not copies) the receipt, etc.

6 weeks later I get a card saying the rebate was rejected for compliance reasons. I call the rebate people, they look it up and say it's all good and the rebate will be coming.

The conspriacy biff in me thinks that there's a new ploicy of rejecting the request and see how many people call in.

This happened with Canon, Fry's, and 2 CF card rebates.

A $200 rebate for the Nikon Coolpix 5400 went through without a problem.

I had a problem recently with a Kragen rebate and I only got the problem fixed after I called the Kragen corporate headquarters and complained about what the rebate processing company was doing.

Boy, that fixed the problem in a hurry.

I do think these rebate companies believe people will forget and not follow through...I do think it is intentional.

Your story. :(

Seems it's not uncommon.

I'm quite impressed with the way Tamron handles their rebates! I've sent in dozens of rebates over the years and never have I had such a fast response.

I bought this lens: Tamron SP AF 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical IF for Minolta, sent off the rebate items, and had my $30 rebate check within a week. Seriously! Instant turnaround time. Only thing I didn't like was the mandatory completion of the warranty card to meet the rebate criteria.

Remember that Canon does not do their own rebate processing. The idiots that do it are very prone to "losing" information. My guess is that they get paidby the rebate processed, whether it's denied or not. There is probably no incentive for them to be accurate.
Call Canon, and insist that it be addressed immediately. Usually that's the only way to get these clowns moving.

I agree with the Tamron rebate...within 2 weeks for me.

I have to wait until I receive a little card in the mail from the rebate center (3 weeks) and then I can mail in the copy of the UPC codes.

I will wait...though not patiently and see what happens...

Make no mistake about it...I will call Canon and raise hell if this is not resolved...hell hath no fury like a woman scorned by the rebate processing center.

Several years ago, I had a similar problem with one of Canon's rebates.

We bought a digital Elph at Best Buy and part of the deal was a free Canon case from Canon. I sent in everything as I was told to and several weeks later got a postcard telling my that my rebate had been rejected for not including the original receipt. I had sent the "rebate receipt" given to me by Best Buy instead. I emailed Canon and the reply I got was essentially, "Too bad, no rebate for you." I called and was basically told the same thing.

Best Buy, when I told them about my problem, made it right and sent me a gift card that covered the cost of a LowePro bag for the camera.

Beofre sending in for my Canon 5D rebate earlier this year, I not only made a copy of the label, but also photographed it `in situ` so to speak.. just in case they decided to not playball.. needn't of worried though as it only took 3 weeks to get a cheque back from them..

I think someone should email this to canon! :)

Is it possible that you switched upc codes and put them in the wrong envelope? They should have a record whether "no upc" or "wrong upc" was included.

Now assuming you got it right, they should take care of it for you. I haven't had a Canon rebate, but over the years I've had quite a few from other companies where they claimed the same. Usually telling them of the error politely will take care of, and if not, then asking for a supervisor and taking it up the food chain does the trick.

I sent in several Canon rebates this year ($400 worth) and was impressed with how well they handled it. Give them a call and see if you can work it out.

I mailed everything in the same envelope...both receipts, both warranty cards, both UPCs.

No mix up on my end...

They said there is NO UPC included for either lens.

I would say that Canon needs to evaluate the effect that their rebate processing service provider is having on their customers and make corrective action.

OR

Canon deliberately denies the rebates to some customers as a cost saving measure.

I've sent in for lots of Canon rebates and never had a problem. Of course, that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Call Canon's customer service and see if they can't get it straightened out. Tell them that you have the warranty cards and photocopies of the UPC labels if that want to see them. If that doesn't work, tell 'em your going to file a claim in Small Claims Court. :D

I'm quite sure that Canon is well aware of the issues. There are regular threads like this over at DPReview, and there are Canon folks who monitor those forums. Same with FM (Fred Miranda) forums.
It probably is a relatively small percentage of claims that are mishandled, but it's definitely larger than it should be.

I am pretty sure that this will be taken care of by Canon...I just have to wait to get the card in the mail that says I did not send in the UPCs and then I can mail the copies of the UPCs.

I am just so annoyed that I made sure, double sure and triple sure even quadruple sure that I enclosed everything and filled out everything correctly only to be told that I didn't so it right...

I am ALWAYS right, LOL. That is why I am annoyed...because I did not make a mistake.

They lost all my stuff for Canon rebates a while back. Luckily I had made copies of everything and they gave me a spacial re-submit address to mail the stuff to. I got my check shortly afterwards. Other places always send a card saying the UPC's are missing. I call and they send the check. Just had to do this twice with Sanddisk rebates. Still waiting on $20 for one of the cards I bought. Manfrotto is really prompt with their rebates.
I still got half a mind to change the date on my 5D receipt and send it in to see if they catch it. Maybe I can screw them for once.

If you have to, picture of the boxes with the missing UPC code next a a newspaper (date on it, etc). I am sure they will come around after you speak to someone t the corporate office.

A while back I sent in a rebate (think it was to Canon). They said I submitted it too late. But the rebate period wasn't over. (I did get the rebate).

Doesn't the rebate processing center know that people will follow up a $300+ rebate? Its not like a $5 rebate where you may let it slide.

Not Canon, but I got a rebate receipt from CompUSA on something and I filled out all the forms, included all required scraps, made copies of all of it (I have a file stuffed with rebate paperwork copies), and was subsequently rejected because the purchase was "outside the rebate period" - I quickly checked my paperwork and discovered that the rebate START date was ONE DAY AFTER MY FRIGGIN PURCHASE! CompUSA display rebate prices all the time for rebates that are not valid.

I firmly believe at least some companies have a policy of rejecting at least some rebates automatically. Imagine the money they save if even 20% of customers don't challenge it? I would also guess it's more like 80% of people that don't challenge. It's already a huge hassle for a $10 or even $20 rebate.

Rebates should be banned - they're simply a trick to get people to make people think they are getting a better price. If you're looking at two competing products and one is $300 and the other is $200 (after $150 mail-in rebate), you buy the "$200" one and they shaft you on the rebate and you end up paying $50 MORE for what you wanted instead of $100 less!

REBATES ARE EVIL.

rant rant rant - gotta go. villages to burn, ya know...
