DPC, you are my last hope. I have a HP PSC 2175 All-in-One printer/scanner/copier, running on a Windows XP Pro laptop with 2.8Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM, and it's acting strange. It prints and copies flawlessly, and will even scan if I use the Windows Scan Wizard. But, the HP Director software that usually opens to ask what you want to do, and lets you choose options such as resolution, size, etc, will not launch.
More to the point, it will act as if it is launching, and will appear in the Task Manager as a process, but the actual screen will never appear. Now, for the summer the printer was disconnected, and I am not certain if I used the scan feature since I've been back at university, until last week when I noticed this problem. Events leading to it include my apartment flooding, which made me replace my two USB hubs with new 2.0 versions. Since then, I tried to scan some old photos and discovered this problem.
-I have switched between hubs, and connected directly to the computer, to no avail.
-I have several (7) times uninstalled and reinstalled the software from the disk, and once downloaded it from HP.com, to no avail
-I have installed with and without security software engaged, to no avail
-I've read HP's FAQ and Troubleshooting, which has been fairly useless. This seems to me a known problem, but their solutions are all "check for viruses, reinstall, blah blah blah".
I'm no guru, but it seems to me this is a software issue, possibly a conflict. Is there something I can check via the command prompt, or some other trick? ANY help would be appreciated!

By chance did you up grade to IE7? I see there are a lot of peeps having HP Director won't open problems since upgrading to IE7.
Can you "acquire" images in your photo editing software to scan? Personally I would use the Twain Drivers and avoid the baggage of the HP Product and use a photo editor to scan...if that works.
I see there are some people working on script hacks as HP is a little slow (duh) to resolve the issue.
EDIT: HP released a fix but how fast is your Internet Connection? It is a big download (220MB) Info and download here...

Director has an optional setting (Settings, Director Settings) for "Automatically Display Director when a document is loaded".
It is a stupid question, but needs to be asked. Do you have that checked? |

I think Andy may be on to something.
This link also goes to HP, and talks about a workaround (if you don't want to do the 200+ mb download).

Oh, now that's interesting. I DID just upgrade to IE7. I will be checking out all the links you posted, thank you. I have a cable connection, so the download is no problem, if that ends up being the way to do it. It's funny, I prowled around HP's support site a few days ago and didn't see this.
I can use other software to run the scanner, and it works, it's just a little clunkier than I'd like when it comes to doing a large batch of photos.
@ Nobody - I'm not sure, I can't get into Director by clicking on the icon to launch it (is there another way?). When I load a page, it doesn't kick in, so I'm assuming it isn't checked. But when I get it working, I will check it, as that will make things easier. Thanks!
