Okay, after posting LisaJane's galleries earlier, I feel a bit self-concious about my own work now.... but.... I had a session in the studio today with an adorable 2 year old named Skyler.

He was so sweet and so pleasant, god I wish all kids were as much fun to work with. Here are a few samples.

You did a wonderful job here. I'm sure his mom is thrilled, I know I would be. Little cutie.

Well, they're no LisaJane's, but they are pretty dang good! If I was a real photographer, I'd specialize in shooting little kids. :)

let's hear about the important stuff here. what was your lighting setup?

I set the studio well before they arrived and had everything metered so I wouldn't have to worry. In that last shot, he is looking straight at my keylight - An AB400 with umbrella. On the opposite side I had the AB800 with softbox turned way down as fill light. Just behind the softbox, between it and the background I have a 5' silver reflector, reflecting the key light onto his back and hair. Then the final AB400 is near the backdrop and set bright enough to blow out just a litte.

That's it. Again, I metered the light and shot several test shots (with the first christmas set-up) until I thought I had the right balance. That way when they arrived it was all about Skyler and him having fun. :)

I took a shot of the studio as it is right now (nothing has moved) to give you a better idea. Does this help?

Thanks so much, glad ya like them. To the left of my main backdrops is a Canadian flag, hung to hide cables and things against the wall - to the right there's a Dutch flag. Both were freebies from a friend ages ago. :)

For those doing holiday portraits, I thought I'd share this little set-up since it didn't cost me a penny.

The little boy is sitting on a small set of stairs that I bought for my dog to climb onto my bed. Dog hated it and refused to use it, so it went to the studio. Perfect size for little kids. I covered the little stairs with a scrap of white felt, the draped it all over with some red holiday beads that I've collected for years. The red stripes in the background are strips of red velvet ribbon (again from my holiday stuff) that I hung from the backdrop stand with scotch tape. And finally a little reindeer (also from my holiday decorations) for some further interest.
To give the shot that 'snowy' look, in processing I used a paintbrush set to white, 25% opacity and just drew along the edges enough to white them out a bit. Total processing was about 1 minute per image.

So a totally free holiday set-up that took about 20 minutes of digging through our holiday decorations and a touch of imagination. :)

nice shots + lighting, BUT if I was critical I would say nothing blows me away.

Agree, good lighting but fairly average shots. Mum probably loves them though so mission accomplished I guess.

Okay, what I'm about to say is completely useless and WAY off topic, but when I saw the title of this I thought this was another twist on the show "Heroes". Maybe the heroin addict was going to paint a picture of Skyler blowing up the city or something. Yeah, I'm lame... :o)

Okay, now that that's said, these are some REALLY impressive portraits here, and I love that you took a picture of your setup. I always use my softbox/AB800 as my key light, but I may switch things up a bit based on your setup. Always experimenting...

Thanks Cindi!

Good think I'm a Heroes fan or I wouldn't have understood any of that, Don! LOL

In my defense, this was a 30 minute 1/2 session with the soul mission of getting a holiday card shot. The others were all me having fun with the kid, but of course all will be offered to the parents for purchase, and yes, they are thrilled.
I really should shoot my lighting setup more often, seems it does help some people, so worth my time! :)

Edit poor typing
