| How can any prime, let alone a 50mm be worth so much? I seems a totally rediculous price for such a simple lense. |

The wider the aperture, the harder it is to control flare, color rendition, edge sharpness, contrast, etc, so the price goes up. With the super high-res sensors around today, there will be a lot of pixel peeping going on by owners of this lens, so they had to make it to higher standards than the earlier versions.
BTW, the fastest current 50mm lens is the Leica Noctilux, which costs over twice as much as the Canon.

Man, I'd love to have one. But at that price, I just can't justify it. It would never be on my camera long enough to be worth that price to me. (okay, I'm a lazy "zoomer" what can I say?!?)

| Sure its f1.2, but I can't think of many applications where a DOF that shallow would be useable, particularly as you can get the f1.4 at a fifth that price. |

The $1,829.95 Canon 85mm f/1.2L has an even shallower DOF and produces Amazing Photos in the right hands.

| The only reason I'd buy the beast is if it was a standout for astro work. Just from looking at the MTF curves, I doubt this is the case. I'll prolly rent it at some point, but unless it's, well, stellar, I prolly will not wind up ever owning it, at least at that price. |

Come on admit it, who else is seriously considering bidding on it? |
